Synopsis
Michele Abbagnano (Nino Manfredi) ekes out a living by abusively selling coffee, hot milk and cappuccino on the night trains running between Naples and Vallo della Lucania; each night, his goods held in a set of vacuum flasks which he carries in a basket along with handfuls of sugar packets he steals from railway cafés, he moves from carriage to carriage peddling warm drinks to the dazed, sleepy passengers.Actors

En Italie, après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, deux architectes, Marco et Paola font connaissance. Paola est séduite par les idées progressistes de Marco et y adhère. Ils se marient, mais les naissances successives de leurs quatre fils amènent Paola à quitter son travail pour les élever. Marco se sent délaissé, puis le temps qui passe use petit à petit sa ferveur sociale et il entame une liaison avec une collègue de travail. Les problèmes engendrés par l'éducation des enfants selon une nouvelle méthode provoquent l'hospitalisation de Paola pour dépression nerveuse. The four Tuscan friends now have over sixty years of age and are nearing retirement. Count Mascetti is always the most unfortunate because in addition to end up in a wheelchair has also lost his wife in an incident. So his friends not to make him suffer the lead in a nursing home, where, however Mascetti never ceases to make his jokes to patients and nurses, very fun with his "supercazzola". In fact, the four friends pranksters and goliardic have painted the hair black man after he fell asleep. The next day the old man feels like reborn and starts to make a lot of exercises dangerous for a man of his age, dying of a heart attack in a short time.

D'un kolkhoze reculé de l'Altaï, Ivan Rastorgouïev et sa femme Nina partent pour une station thermale sur la mer Noire. Ils laissent derrière eux la vie villageoise, les champs à perte de vue, leurs amis, des tablées chantant les chansons populaires. Leur voyage dans le train est ponctué de situations tragicomiques provoquées par le décalage entre la mentalité de paysan et citadin. Ils y rencontrent un charmant voleur qui se fait passer auprès d'eux pour un ingénieur ferroviaire, leur fait boire du Cognac trouvé dans une valise dérobée dont il inspecte le contenu sur le champ, et s'enfuit à l'arrivée de la milice lancée à ses trousses. S'apercevant de leur erreur, les Rastorgouïev deviennent extrêmement méfiants et voient les criminels partout. Ainsi, ils mettent du temps à faire confiance au professeur linguiste qui se joint à eux dans le compartiment. Mais le brave homme finit par briser la glace et les invite à passer quelques jours chez lui à Moscou. Les Rastorgouïev y découvrent le quotidien d'une famille d'intellectuels et une multitude d'objets dont ils ne soupçonnaient pas l’existence. Ivan se trouve même invité à une conférence linguistique où il raconte devant un parterre médusé une anecdote de sa jeunesse. Puis, le couple poursuit son chemin vers la mer.
