Religious and meek postal service worker John Paul George (Kevin Downes), named after three members of The Beatles, has never met his father, Stephen, (Sean McGowan), because he died somehow during the Vietnam War in 1969. While rummaging through the garage of his recently deceased mother's house, he comes across a box of his father's war belongings and finds a letter mentioning "Eddie J. Adams", (Scott Whyte), his best friend from Vietnam. Curious, John starts calling people in the country with the name, eventually coming across someone who seems to recognize the name. John travels to Mississippi, where he finds that the person he spoke with on the phone was actually Edward's son, Wayne Adams, (David A.R. White), a reclusive, strange and ill-tempered hermit. John tells Wayne that he came to Mississippi to learn more about his father from Wayne. Wayne reveals that he has many letters from his father, most of which detail John's father, who got him to rediscover his cynical, misguided faith. Later that night, Wayne impulsively cuts the roof off his 1965 Ford Thunderbird to "make it a convertible for a road trip". Confused and angered because his wedding to his fiancee Cynthia, (Candace Cameron Bure) is in a matter of weeks, John protests the trip, preferring to just read the letters at Wayne's house. Wayne is insistent, however, that they go on the long and arduous road trip to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. to see their fathers' names on The Wall and get closure. Despite clashing many times over many things, such as Wayne getting into a fight with rowdy gas station patrons and John being forced to pay for the letters if he wants to read them, on the trip they learn more about their fathers and themselves.

After David is brought to him, Gurdlinger forces David to smuggle marijuana from Mexico as a solution to clear his debt. Realizing that one man attempting to get through customs is too suspicious, he hires a middle-aged stripper neighbor stage-named Rose (Jennifer Aniston), a runaway and petty thief named Casey (Emma Roberts), and his 18-year-old neighbor Kenny (Will Poulter), to pose as a bogus family called the "Millers". When the Millers reach the compound, they find out that the amount of marijuana they were picking up is not "a smidge" as Gurdlinger had informed them, but actually two tons. Because of the extra load of the marijuana on the RV, one of the radiator hoses breaks while going up a steep incline. A family they had encountered at the border, the Fitzgeralds, consisting of Don (Nick Offerman), Edith (Kathryn Hahn), and Melissa (Molly Quinn), catch up to them and tow the Millers' RV to a repair shop. In September 1965, on a New England island called New Penzance, 12-year-old orphan Sam Shakusky is attending Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout summer camp led by Scoutmaster Randy Ward. Suzy Bishop, also 12, lives on the island with her parents, Walt and Laura, both attorneys, and her three younger brothers in a house called Summer's End. Sam and Suzy, both introverted, intelligent and mature for their age, met in the summer of 1964 during a church performance of Noye's Fludde and have been pen pals since then. Having fallen in love over the course of their correspondence, they have made a secret pact to reunite and run away together. Sam brings camping equipment, and Suzy brings her binoculars, six books, her kitten, and her brother's battery-powered record player. They hike, camp and fish together in the wilderness with the goal of reaching a secluded cove on the island. They are confronted by a group of Khaki Scouts who try to capture them, and during the resulting altercation, Suzy injures one of the Scouts with scissors and Camp Ivanhoe's dog is killed by a stray shot from a bow and arrow wielded by one of the Scouts. The Scouts flee and Sam and Suzy hike to the cove which they name Moonrise Kingdom. They set up camp and go swimming. Later, while drying off, they begin dancing to Françoise Hardy in their underwear. As the romantic tension between them grows, they kiss repeatedly.
