Caramel revolves around the intersecting lives of five Lebanese women. Layale (Nadine Labaki) works in a beauty salon in Beirut along with two other women, Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri) and Rima (Joanna Moukarzel). Each one has a problem: Layale is stuck in a dead-end relationship with a married man; Nisrine is no longer a virgin but is set to be married, and in her conservative family pre-marital sex is not accepted; Rima is attracted to women; Jamale (Gisèle Aouad), a regular customer and wannabe actress, is worried about getting old; Rose (Sihame Haddad), a tailoress with a shop next to the salon, is an old woman who had devoted her life to taking care of her mentally unbalanced elder sister Lili (Aziza Semaan), but has found her first love. The film does not refer to any of the political problems or recent warfare that has troubled Lebanon. Rather, Labaki's tale paints everyday people with everyday problems.

After Athens fell under the government of the Thirty Tyrants, the lives of citizens are no longer safe. The philosopher Socrates, meanwhile, continues his so-called philosophical "preaching", gathering more and more young disciples. Among them is Plato, who notes the speeches of his master, not knowing about the conflict and what apparently seems so real as to be considered a principle. The youth of Athens like Socrates, although the conservatives, as the comedian Aristophanes, ridicule him, believing him to be one the sophists.

His family’s country house is there, looked after by a solitary housekeeper. Jacques has not arrived when Julien turns up and is let in by the beautiful but largely silent woman. While she prepares him dinner, he reflects on the ups and downs of his life in Paris before the war with the charming rich Jacques and his vivacious girl friend Odile. After showing him to a bedroom, the servant spends the night with him. In the morning, he rushes off to the railway station but does not board the Paris train. Something, we do not know what, impels him to stay.
