The film was based on the novel No Surrender by Martha Albrand. It was filmed under the title O.S.S. and then the title After Midnight.
The theme song, "Mona Lisa" performed in the film by Charlie Spivak with Tommy Lynn, won the Academy Award for Best Song. It was a #1 hit for Nat King Cole in 1950.
Synopsis
A group of agents of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (a forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency) is sent to German-occupied Italy during World War II to knock out the German-held Italian railroad system. In accomplishing this mission, most of them are killed because of an inside betrayal.Actors

In 1941, in Mei-Ki, China, war profiteer David Jones (Alan Ladd) narrowly escapes with his life when Chinese Captain Tao-Yuan-Kai arrests him for selling oil to the Japanese but releases him because he is American. By late 1944, it is obvious that the Germans will lose the war. American Colonel Devlin (Gary Merrill) leads a military intelligence unit that recruits German prisoners of war to spy on their former comrades. The movie is filmed in the style of a docudrama. In World War I, American pilots Lt. Jerry Young (Fredric March) and Lt. Mike "Slug" Richards (Jack Oakie) are assigned to the dangerous mission of reconnaissance over enemy lines.
