Alors qu'elle visite l'Italie, une jeune et belle touriste française, Martine, est arrêtée par erreur par la police qui a découvert de la drogue sur elle, malencontreusement placée par une délinquante droguée. Incarcérée dans une prison pour femmes, Martine découvre aussitôt l'enfer carcéral. L'injustice et le sadisme qui y règnent amènent les détenues à se rebeller. Maitrisées, elles sont envoyées dans une prison située en pleine mer d'où toute tentative d'évasion semble impossible. La menace et la rébellion grondent.

Three women of widely differing backgrounds walk out of the gates of London's Holloway Prison together at the end of their respective sentences. Monica Marsden (Mitchell) is a well-bred young woman, led into the world of crime by her smooth-talking but crooked lover David (Terence Morgan); Monica martyred herself by taking the fall for a crime he masterminded. Stella Jarvis (Collins) is a beautiful working-class girl who found her attractive appearance made West End prostitution a source of easy money, and was imprisoned after disregarding numerous cautions for soliciting. Mrs. Quilliam (Harrison) is a kindly elderly widow, who lived in poverty and was jailed for repeat shoplifting offences. Monica proposes that the three should meet up later for a fancy dinner, for which she will pay, to discuss how their first day of freedom has gone.

René Le Guen (Marcel Mouloudji) is a former resistance fighter trained as a young man as a professional killer. After World War II, he has no qualms in applying these skills and is arrested for murder. Convicted and condemned to death, he is held in a prison cell with other murderers sentenced to death. Men to be guillotined are taken out at night, so they wait in fear and only sleep after dawn. While Le Guen's lawyer (Claude Laydu) tries to achieve a pardon for his client, three of Le Guen's fellow inmates are executed, one by one, in the course of the film.

While dealing with serious issues, the film was created in comedic form.
