The screenplay was written by John Lee Mahin, Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, based upon a story by Edgar Selwyn.
The plot concerns a kept woman who finds herself drawn to a charismatic South American rancher while aboard a cruise, all the while still harboring feelings for her married lover back home.
Chained is the fifth of eight collaborations between Crawford and Gable.
Synopsis
Eager to marry his devoted secretary, Diane Lovering (Joan Crawford), New York City shipping magnate Richard Field (Otto Kruger) asks his wife Louise (Marjorie Gateson) for a divorce. Louise, however, refuses to give up her social position and denies Richard's request. Although Diane insists that she will continue to love him without the benefit of marriage, Richard asks her to contemplate her choices while cruising to South America on one of his boats. Diane agrees to the cruise, but vows to return to New York unchanged.Actors

Marian Martin (Joan Crawford) is a factory girl living with her mother in the working class section of Erie PA. Factory boy Al Manning (Wallace Ford) hopes to marry her, but Marian is determined to find a better life. When a train makes a stop in town, Marian looks through the windows and sees the wealthy passengers. She then makes the acquaintance of one of the train passengers, Wally Stuart (Richard "Skeets" Gallagher), a New Yorker who gives her champagne and writes down his address, telling her to look him up if she ever makes it to New York. Marian, now tipsy from the champagne, happily returns home. Giggling, she tells Al and her mother that she was drinking down by the railroad tracks.

Magazine publisher Van Stanhope (Clark Gable) and his wife, Linda, (Myrna Loy) are celebrating their third wedding anniversary. They are very much in love and Van gives Linda a diamond bracelet. Gerald Meldrick (Clark Gable) and Anya von Duren (Rosalind Russell) are a pair of rival jewel thieves at large in India. Both parties are after the same prize, a priceless diamond owned by the Duchess of Beltravers (Jessie Ralph). Harry Van (Clark Gable), an American World War I veteran, tries to reenter show biz and ends up in a faltering mentalist show with an inept, aging alcoholic, Madame Zuleika (Laura Hope Crews, who also appeared in Gone with the Wind as Aunt Pittypat). While giving performances in Omaha, he is courted by Irene (Norma Shearer), a trapeze artist, who claims to come from Russia and hopes both to replace Harry's drunken partner in the show and be his lover. Jan, jeune femme majeure vit seule avec son père, Stephen, un grand avocat miné par l'alcoolisme. Le père et la fille sont extrêmement attachés l'un à l'autre. Stephen a élevé sa fille dans un esprit de liberté, partant du principe qu'elle doit faire ses expériences elle-même et en tirer les leçons, ce genre de comportement place Stephen et Jan en porte à faux vis-à-vis du reste de leur famille. Stephen doit défendre Ace Wilfong un gangster accusé de meurtre et qui n'a que peu de chance d'échapper à la potence. Dans les coulisses du procès, Wilfong est présenté à Jan et les deux jeunes gens ne sont pas insensibles l'un à l'autre. Pendant que le procès se termine Jan rend visite à sa grand-mère qui fête ses 100 ans. au cours de la réception Dwight annonce qu'il a l'intention de se fiancer avec Jan. Stephen qui a réussi à innocenter Wilfong la rejoint un peu plus tard en compagnie de ce dernier. La famille fait alors comprendre à Wilfong qui n'est pas le bienvenu. Cette attitude choque Jan qui s'en va avec lui.

Racing driver Mike Brannan (Clark Gable), has a reputation for doing whatever it takes to win. Powerful nationwide columnist Regina Forbes (Barbara Stanwyck) decides to interview Brannan just before a race, and becomes annoyed when he is rather brusque with her. Brannan and popular competitor Joe Youghal fight for the lead. When a car they are about to lap crashes in front of them, Brannan safely drives around it on the inside, forcing Youghal to try to go outside. In her column the next day, Regina blames Brannan for Youghal's death and brings up a prior racing fatality involving him. As a result, he is barred by nervous racing circuit managers anxious to avoid bad publicity.
