The film begins with the point of view of someone wandering through the streets of Georgetown, a voice informing us "I have dreams... of a rose... and of falling down a long flight of stairs." The point of view shows a warning of evil about to arrive later that night at a church. Demonic growls are heard. Leaves and other street trash suddenly come flying into the church as a crucifix comes to life. It then cuts to Lieutenant William F. Kinderman (George C. Scott) at a crime scene, where a 12-year-old boy named Thomas Kintry has been murdered., 1h55

Nelson Wright (Kiefer Sutherland), convinces four of his medical school classmates — Joe Hurley (William Baldwin), Dave Labraccio (Kevin Bacon), Randy Steckle (Oliver Platt) and Rachel Manus (Julia Roberts) — to help him discover what lies beyond death. To do this they must stop his heart, producing a flat line graph on the heart monitor signal. Nelson flatlines for one minute before his classmates resuscitate him. While "dead", he experiences a sort of afterlife. He sees a vision of a boy he bullied as a child, Billy Mahoney. He merely tells his friends that he can't describe what he saw, but something is there. The others decide to follow Nelson's daring feat. Joe flatlines next, and he experiences an erotic afterlife sequence. He agrees with Nelson's claim that something indeed exists. Dave is third to flatline, and he sees a vision of a girl, Winnie Hicks (Kesha Reed), that he bullied in grade school. The three men start to experience vivid hallucinations that are related to their afterlife visions, but Nelson's circumstances are particularly freakish; he is repeatedly physically attacked by Billy Mahoney and each day presents with fresh cuts and wounds. Joe, engaged to be married, is haunted by home videos that he secretly filmed of his sexual trysts with other women. Dave is confronted by a vision of Winnie Hicks on a train, and she verbally taunts him like he did to her., 1h24

The film opens with a young Christine (Oakley Stevenson) breaking into a convent and systematically killing each and every nun she comes across before setting fire to the place and leaving. The scene then cuts to modern day, where it's established that the convent has since been abandoned and is a popular place for local college students to break in and vandalize, as it's reported to be haunted. It's particularly popular for sororities and fraternities to break in and try to spray paint their letters on the bell tower, which is where Clorissa (Joanna Canton) is headed that very night with her friends. She's joined by her old goth friend Mo (Megahn Perry), her nerdy brother Brant (Liam Kyle Sullivan), ex-fraternity brother Frijole (Richard Trapp), the cheerleader Kaitlin (Renée Graham) and her dog, and fraternity brothers Chad (Dax Miller) and Biff (Jim Golden)., 1h26
