Il s'inspire du livre Chocolat, clown nègre : l'histoire oubliée du premier artiste noir de la scène française de Gérard Noiriel, publié par Bayard en 2012. Bien qu'annonçant « retracer l'histoire de cet artiste hors du commun », le film s'écarte sensiblement de l'histoire réelle du Clown Chocolat.
En 2017, le film reçoit sur cinq nominations, deux César, celui du meilleur acteur dans un second rôle pour James Thierrée et celui des meilleurs décors.
Synopsis
En 1897, un homme noir du nom de Kananga, ancien fils d'esclave de Cuba, joue un petit rôle de cannibale dans le modeste cirque Delvaux. Le clown blanc George Foottit, sommé de renouveler ses numéros par le directeur du cirque, a l'idée de s'associer avec Kananga dans un duo de clown blanc autoritaire et de clown noir souffre-douleur, qui prendra le nom de Chocolat. Le duo comique est très bien accueilli par le public et Delvaux commence à faire des affaires. La rumeur du succès se répand en France au point que Joseph Oller, directeur du Nouveau Cirque, convainc Foottit et Chocolat de prendre du service dans son établissement parisien. Le succès dans la capitale est immédiat, et Chocolat devient le premier artiste noir de la scène française. Grisé par l'argent, il s'adonne au jeu et se laisse aller aux plaisirs des femmes.Actors

En 1897, à Paris. Le jeune Edmond Rostand (Thomas Solivérès) n'a rien écrit depuis deux ans lorsqu'il propose un rôle au célèbre Constant Coquelin (Olivier Gourmet). The film depicts approximately 19 consecutive hours in the lives of three friends in their early twenties from immigrant families living in an impoverished multi-ethnic French housing project (a ZUP – zone d'urbanisation prioritaire) in the suburbs of Paris, in the aftermath of a riot. Vinz (Vincent Cassel), who is Jewish, is filled with rage. He sees himself as a gangster ready to win respect by killing a cop, manically practising the role of Travis Bickle from the film Taxi Driver in the mirror secretly. His attitude towards police, for instance, is a simplified, stylized blanket condemnation, even to individual policemen who make an effort to steer the trio clear of troublesome situations. Hubert (Hubert Koundé) is an Afro-French boxer and small time drug dealer, the most mature of the three, whose gymnasium was burned in the riots. The quietest, most thoughtful and wisest of the three, he sadly contemplates the ghetto and the hate around him. He expresses the wish to simply leave this world of violence and hate behind him, but does not know how since he lacks the means to do so. Saïd – Sayid in some English subtitles – (Saïd Taghmaoui) is an Arab Maghrebi who inhabits the middle ground between his two friends' responses to their place in life.

Le Docteur Knock est un ancien voyou devenu médecin qui débarque dans le petit village de Saint-Maurice afin d'y faire fortune selon une méthode particulière. The film tells of the events that began in the summer of 1991 when wealthy heiress, Ghislaine Marchal, was found murdered in the basement of her home with the message "Omar M'a Tuer" (grammatically incorrect French, approximately "Omar has kill me") written beside in her own blood.
