In 1911, a willful and determined man from peasant stock named Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu) enlists in the military and is assigned to the Sahara Desert under the aristocratic Colonel Dubreuilh (Philippe Noiret). Saganne attracts the attentions of Madeleine (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of the regional administrator. In the Sahara, Saganne earns the respect of the Arabs, including Amajan, an independent warrior. After several campaigns, Saganne travels to Paris on a diplomatic mission. After having an affair with a journalist in Paris, Saganne returns to Africa, where he leads a valliant defense against Sultan Omar. He is awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, and marries Madeleine. The onset of World War I puts his success and happiness at risk.

Orléans, 1975. Les services de police de la ville sont dirigés par le commissaire divisionnaire Ganay. Henri Savin has managed a trucking company for his lover, Dominique Montlaur, for many years. Now he is planning to leave her for Julie Manet, the woman he has made pregnant, and Dominique is hysterical. She first threatens suicide, then shows up at a meeting of Savin and Julie. Dominique tries everything she can think of to break Savin and Julie apart, to no avail. Frustrated in her efforts, she jumps off a cliff and dies. Savin insists that he and Julie lie to the police about the encounter, although Dominique's death was a suicide and therefore they had no direct hand in it. Detective Waldeck investigates Dominique's death.

The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

Catherine et Marcello forment un couple uni. Leur fille, Camille, âgée de neuf mois, représente pour eux l'axe autour duquel tourne le monde. Catherine et Marcello s'avouent heureux et ne voient pas plus loin que le bout de leur bonheur. Mais un jour, ce qui n'arrive qu'aux autres s'abat sur eux : la petite Camille meurt. Catherine et Marcello refusent d'accepter ce coup du sort : ils rompent avec leur vie passée, leurs amis, leurs proches et s'enferment dans leur appartement. Là, ils vivent repliés sur eux-mêmes, traversant des périodes d'incompréhension. Marcello abandonne son métier ; Catherine, lorsqu'elle sort, passe ses journées à vanter les mérites de sa fille aux mères de famille qui promènent leurs enfants dans des parcs… Et puis un soir, las de ce décor qui ne change jamais, Catherine et Marcello décident de partir loin, à l'aventure. Dans un village où ils s'arrêtent, ils croisent une noce. Peu à peu, la vie reprend ses droits : Catherine et Marcello boivent, dansent, rient. Leur gaieté, d'abord factice, devient plus réelle. Mais au petit matin, le souvenir de Camille resurgit sous la forme d'une vieille photo oubliée.

Ageing court composer Marin Marais recalls his former master and un-equalled viol player, the jansenist Monsieur de Sainte Colombe. Sainte Colombe buried himself in his music after the death of his wife bringing up his two daughters on his own, and teaching them to be musicians, and playing in a consort with them for local noble audiences. His reputation reaching the court of Louis XIV, the king sent an envoy, Caignet, to request him to play at court. But Sainte Colombe sent the envoy away as well as the abbé Mathieu, and shut himself away in a cabin in his garden in order to perfect the art of viol playing.

Lafayette (Gérard Depardieu) est un jeune électricien qui vit à New York, mais il n’en fréquente que trois repères : le Musée de Cire de la Rome Antique, de Flaxman (James Coco) où il travaille, un petit théâtre géré par des féministes, son appartement en sous-sol infesté de rats. Un matin, il remarque dans la rue des individus vêtus de combinaisons blanches, il prend peur alors que ce ne sont que des dératisateurs. Au théâtre, les femmes préparent un spectacle dans lequel il est question du viol d’un homme. Lafayette, mal à l’aise durant ces répétitions, provoque quelque peu les comédiennes qui décident de le violer réellement. Cet acte de violence est accompli par Angélica (Gail Lawrence) qui par ailleurs est amoureuse de lui.
