Cinema Paithiyam is a 1975 Tamil language drama film directed by Muktha Srinivasan. The film features Jayachitra and Kamal Haasan in lead roles.
The film, produced by A. L. Srinivasan under his A. L. S. Productions.
It is a remake of the Hindi hit film Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi (1971), which made Jaya Bhaduri a star.

Actress Jayachitra later claimed in an interview that this film ran for 100 days at Devi-Sridevi Complex in Chennai, and that "this was the first Tamil black-and-white film that ran for so long in that theater complex."

Synopsis

Adhering to its title 'Cinema Paithiyam', the movie depicts and traces the life and transformation of Jaya (Jayachitra) from the reel world to the real world. So obsessed is she with movies and the movie world, that she worships the popular film hero Jai Shankar, believing all that he portrays on screen, to be his real self. He becomes the ideal man of her dreams, and she even tattoos his name in her arm. Hell breaks loose when she refuses to marry the boy Natarajan (Kamalhaasan) arranged by her brother and her sister-in-law. At his juncture, steps in her Uncle, who takes it upon himself to show her the true world, by taking her on a trip around the real life of a star.

The title of the movie Aayiram Poi (ஆயிரம் பொய்) means A 1000 lie in Tamil. Cho Ramaswamy Famous Novel "yaaro Iver Yaaro". An old Tamil saying goes like "Its alright to tell a 1000 lies to make a marriage work" and this movie closely follows that old adage. Chinnadurai intensely dislikes his Brother-in-law, Kanakasabai owing to an insult in the past. So Chinnadurai stands in the way of a marriage arrangement for his daughter, Malathi (Vanisri)and Kanagasabai's son Ravi (Jaishankar).

Mohan (Muthuraman) is the eldest son in a middle-class family, having superior complex that he should be first in every thing. He and Radha (Jayalalitha) fall in love. They get married. Mohan works in a low wage job which is insufficient for the family. So, Radha decides to join as sales officer and start working in a company. Her hard work earns her good name and promotion in job. So, her respect in family rises as it improves the economic status of the family and she is able to fulfill the needs and wants of the family. Mohan is intolerable seeing Radha's respect growing, he starts hating her. Then, Radha decides on Mohan's sister Suseela's wedding. Mohan decides to earn a lot of money by hook or by crook to take revenge on Radha. He earns money by modelling and then makes Radha step out of their home. Suseela's marriage is about to stop. Whether Radha succeeded in conducting her marriage or not reveals the crux of the story.

Dr. Dwarakanath (Sivaji Ganesan) is a renowned ophthalmologist in Coimbatore, devoted to God and with a high moral standing. He shares his happy home with his son Srivathsan (Sarath Babu), daughter-in-law Manju (Saritha), a couple of relatives and a faithful servant (played by Manorama). Dwarakanath's peaceful life is shattered by a double whammy, first when he discovers that Manju is afflicted with a dreadful disease and has only a few months to live and then a blind man Kumaran(Jaishankar) who is seeking revenge against an unknown perpetrator responsible for his sister's suicide, shows up at his doors and Dwarakanath realizes the culprit is none other than his son Srivathsan. Dwarakanath tries to keep his son's culpability under wraps for Manju's sake considering her impending demise but Manju who is ignorant of her own ailment, misconstrues Dwarakanath's intentions and tries to unmask the culprit's identity and it soon turns out to be an intricate cat and mouse game between them both.
