Coolie No. 1 is a 1995 Bollywood comedy film directed by David Dhawan. The film stars Karisma Kapoor, Govinda, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar with music by Anand-Milind. This movie was one of the first successful movie of Karisma Kapoor. Actor Govinda received the Star Screen Award Special Jury Award for his role in this movie as 'performer of the decade'. Over the years the movie has become a classic in Indian film history and is now considered a cult film. The movie is a remake of a 1993 Tamil film Chinna Mapillai.
Synopsis
Shaadiram Gharjode (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is once humiliated by Hoshiyar Chand (Kader Khan) when Shaadiram goes to inform him about a family wanting to marry their son to Hoshiyar's daughter. Hoshiyar Chand insults them as he wants both his daughters to marry into the richest family. Gharjode decides to teach Hoshiyar Chand a lesson: He meets a coolie called Raju (Govinda) and they go to Hoshiyar Chand's village pretending to be a rich family. Hoshiyar is impressed and he wants his daughter Malti (Karisma Kapoor) to marry Raju. This leads to humorous situations in the climax.Actors

Shyamsunder (Govinda) is a naive villager who has a great interest in music. He travels to the city, making friends with Muthuswami (Satish Kaushik), a South Indian tabla player. The president of the TIPS cassette company, Khurana (Kader Khan), is impressed with his musical abilities and promotes him to a high position. As he goes back to repay his debts in the village he receives tragic news of the death of his wife Pooja (Karisma Kapoor) has died in a flood. He then marries Khurana's daughter Divya (Tabu). When Khurana has a heart attack, he finds his "presumed dead" wife Pooja in the hospital. He then has to fool his two wives, even if it includes leading a double life to make sure Pooja and Divya don't discover he has married both of them.

Raja Babu (Govinda) is a poor orphan adopted by a wealthy village couple (Kader Khan and Aruna Irani). He is a typical country bumpkin, good-hearted but lacking in urban manners. His vanity, not discouraged by his mother's doting, leads him to have his photograph taken often at the village photo studio, each time in a different outfit. He is always accompanied by his sidekick Nandu, (Shakti Kapoor). Nandu is of a lower rung in the social strata, evidenced by his refusal to be seated on Raja's motorcycle, even when implored: the same kindness extended by the wealthy Singh family in adopting Raja is evident in the family's treatment of Raja's friend, in spite of Nandu's clownish antics.

Mrs. Malhotra (Reema Lagoo) is the mother of twins, who were separated at birth, and she only has one son. Mrs. Malhotra goes into shock and then is restricted to a wheelchair. She resides with her husband and son in the US. Quiet and mature Prem, (Salman Khan) one of the twins, and his dad (Dalip Tahil) return to India together with Mrs. Malhotra to get Prem married. Ajay (Anil Kapoor) an intelligent ex-student of the S. T. School is appointed in the same school as a teacher. Jaya (Karisma Kapoor) who studies in his class harasses him by playing mischievous pranks. Ajay's refusal to enter into a romantic relationship with Jaya upsets her. She challenges him that she will one day become his wife. In a hurry he marries Saraswati (Juhi Chawla), an illiterate orphan girl. Jaya befriends Saraswati by teaching her everything from cooking to reading and writing. One day, some terrorists attack the school and take the children as hostages. Ajay, Jaya and all are trapped. In between Jaya gives her life to save Ajay, there Saraswati reveals that she knows about Jaya's love for Ajay and the same feelings were in Ajay's heart which he never discloses due to his faithfulness towards his wife. Jaya dies at the end of the film.

Sapna (Karisma Kapoor) has been brought up by her three doting, but eccentric uncles. Uncle no. 1 (Paresh Rawal) is a Hindu religious fanatic, while Uncle. No. 2 (Om Puri) is a former wrestler who is very in to fitness, and makes Sapna do intense workout routines daily. Uncle no. 3 (Anupam Kher) is in to fashion and western music. The uncles all wish for her to marry, but their differences clash, as each of them want the boy to have the same interests as them. Sapna is tired of dancing to her uncle's tunes all her life, and wishes to take a group trip to Europe. However, when she expresses her wishes to her nanny, Mary (Himani Shivpuri), her uncles fire the nanny for giving Sapna such foolish ideas. However, Mary works for another family, and tells them of Sapna's plight. She shares Sapna's photo with Raja (Salman Khan). He is pleased with her photo and is determined to make her his bride. Meanwhile, Sapna looks to a last resort and tries to run away, but Uncle no. 3 catches her and volunteers to take her to the airport himself. On her travels through Europe, Raja creates nothing but trouble for her, but circumstances separate them from the rest of the tour group, and Raja saves Sapna's life. They fall in love, and wish to marry once they return to India, but Raja must first impress all three of her uncles. Through a series of comic events, Raja wins their hearts. He and Sapna happily marry in the end.

Deeka (Vinod Khanna) had been in jail for several crimes, including bank robberies. When his prison sentence is over, Deeka decides to go straight. Unfortunately, while in a bank, he becomes a victim of a bungling bank robber, Inder or Eena (Rishi Kapoor), who needs money to get medical treatment for his mother (Dina Pathak). When the police arrive, they witness Eena with the notorious bank robber, and come to the conclusion that Deeka has gone back to his criminal ways. Deeka's attempts to convince them are in vain, and he must escape together with Eena for now, and he does so. The police are after Deeka, and he must get a hold of Eena and get him to confess to his crime, and therefore clear his name. But Eena is unwilling to confess, and runs away from Deeka.
