Synopsis
La ressemblance étonnante entre un homme insignifiant, Gabriel Dupon, représentant en boutons, et un cambrioleur de grande envergure, le photographe Manuel Ismora, permet à ce dernier de réussir des vols sensationnels. Or Dupon s'éprend de Coraline, la maîtresse d'Ismora qui est séduite par la tendresse du bonhomme.Actors

In flashbacks, Connie Doyle's (Ricki Lake) early life gives an idea of her mindset. At 18, she meets womanizer Steve DeCunzo (Loren Dean), moves in with him and winds up pregnant. He kicks her out, denying responsibility. A destitute Connie, trying to find a shelter, gets inadvertently swept aboard a train at Grand Central Terminal. With no ticket and no money, Connie is rescued by Hugh Winterbourne (Brendan Fraser) and taken to his private compartment. She meets his wife, Patricia, who is also pregnant. When the train crashes, Connie is mistaken for Patricia because she is wearing Patricia's wedding band, which has the couple's names engraved on the inside. In the hospital, no longer pregnant, she learns Patricia and Hugh both died in the crash.

Issue de milieu modeste, la jeune Emma Eckhert commence sa carrière comme employée dans la chapellerie familiale. Son mariage avec Moïse Nathanson, un ami de la famille plus âgé qu'elle, ne l'empêche ainsi pas de poursuivre sa liaison avec Camille Sowcroft, la fille d'un bijoutier, qui l'aide à s'enrichir en lui avançant de l'argent qu'Emma fait rapidement fructifier par d'astucieuses opérations boursières. En 1929, Emma est devenue l'une des banquières les plus appréciées de Paris. Mais sa fulgurante réussite lui attire entre autres l'antipathie du puissant banquier Horace Vannister, qui est une réplique du banquier Horace Finaly ; celui-ci intervient auprès du Président du Conseil Préfailles, qui est une réplique de Raymond Poincaré, pour faire interdire les activités d'Emma Eckhert, qui est une réplique de Marthe Hanau et la poursuivre en justice. Celle-ci finit par être assassinée au cours d'un meeting où elle expliquait aux épargnants qui lui avaient fait confiance, comment elle allait les rembourser.

The movie follows the story of an amiable kindergarten director named Troshkin who looks exactly like a cruel criminal nicknamed Docent (Доцент, literally associate professor) that has stolen Alexander the Great's helmet at an archaeological excavation. Docent and his gang are caught by police, but Docent is imprisoned in a different jail than his mates. Since Troshkin looks identical to Docent, the police send him undercover to prison with the real criminals to get information about the stolen helmet. He must pretend to be the real felon Docent, so in order to be convincing, Troshkin, a well-educated and good-natured man, has to learn slang and manners of criminals.
