Il est sorti en France avec comme surtitre Les Belles Années, mais cette dénomination n'a pas été très employée. Le film, d'abord réalisé pour être un feuilleton télévisé, a été raccourci pour une exploitation en salle. Le scénario du film est librement inspiré du très célèbre roman italien pour la jeunesse Le Livre-cœur (Cuore) paru en Italie en 1886.
Synopsis
À Turin, en 1915, le jeune lieutenant Enrico Bottini part pour le front. Sur le quai de la gare, il croise Garrone, un ancien camarade de l'école primaire. Cela lui rappelle les souvenirs de ses jeunes années et il entreprend d'écrire le journal de sa dernière année d'école primaire, 1899-1900. Jour après jour, il égrène le souvenir de ses camarades, de leur esprit d'insolence ou de soumission et découvre que c'est là que s'est fait l'apprentissage de la vie. Mais peu à peu il est troublé car les valeurs patriotiques enseignées sur les bancs de l'école sont confrontées à la réalité atroce et insensée de la guerre.Actors

Along the Venetian seaside, on the morning of September 8, 1943, Alberto Innocenzi, junior NCO of the Royal Italian Army is shocked when (in response to the separate surrender signed by the Badoglio government in Cassibile) the former allies of the Wehrmacht surround and take by storm the base where he's stationed. Innocenzi, along with some disbanded soldiers, manages to distance the German troops and is thoroughly shocked when, contrary to his plan of finding a higher echelon to which to report, most of the men accept the fact that the war is over for them and "everybody should just go home".

Kang In-ho (Gong Yoo) is the newly appointed art teacher at Benevolence Academy, a deaf school children in the fictional city of Mujin, North Jeolla Province. He has a dark past - his wife was a high school student who committed suicide and his daughter is under the care of his mother. He is excited to teach his new students, yet the children are aloof and distant, trying to avoid running into him as much as possible. In-ho does not give up, however, trying to show the kids that he cares. When the children finally open up, In-ho faces the shocking and ugly truth about the school and what the students have been enduring in secret: the children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, In-ho teams up with human rights activist Seo Yoo-jin (Jung Yu-mi). But he and Yoo-jin soon realize the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth. In addition to using "privileges of former post" (Jeon-gwan ye-u) the accused do not hesitate to lie and bribe their way to get very light sentences.
