Synopsis
En 1897, à Paris. Le jeune Edmond Rostand (Thomas Solivérès) n'a rien écrit depuis deux ans lorsqu'il propose un rôle au célèbre Constant Coquelin (Olivier Gourmet). Le seul problème : la pièce n'est pas écrite, il n'a que le titre : Cyrano de Bergerac. Entre les histoires d'amour de son meilleur ami, les caprices des actrices, la jalousie de sa femme, le manque d'enthousiasme de son entourage, Edmond se met à écrire cette pièce à laquelle personne ne croit.Actors

Henri, un vieil homme acariâtre veuf depuis trente ans, est contraint d'accueillir dans son appartement parisien une jeune colocataire, Constance. Celle-ci doit supporter le caractère de son bailleur alors qu'elle souffre déjà de ses échecs dans les études et dans la musique, mais aussi de ses relations difficiles avec son père, vendeur de fruits et légumes sur les marchés d'Orléans, ainsi que de sa vie amoureuse instable. De surcroît, elle éprouve des difficultés à payer son loyer malgré un petit boulot de serveuse. En échange d'une exemption de loyer, Henri l'oblige à séduire son fils Paul, qu'il dédaigne, pour le séparer de sa femme Valérie, que le vieil homme déteste. Constance accepte malgré son embarras et brise effectivement le ménage. Sa mission accomplie, elle fait comprendre à Paul que leur aventure n'aura pas de suite. Ce dernier retrouve sa femme qui lui apprend qu'elle est enceinte, ce qu'elle attendait depuis une décennie, et le couple se reforme. Dans les mois qui suivent, encouragée par Henri, Constance prépare un concours de musique pour entrer dans une école de Londres. Alors qu'elle est en Angleterre, Henri est hospitalisé dans un état grave. Avant qu'il meure, Paul lui présente son petit-fils et Constance lui annonce qu'elle est reçue au concours, mensonge délibéré pour qu'il s'en aille heureux.

En 1897, un homme noir du nom de Kananga, ancien fils d'esclave de Cuba, joue un petit rôle de cannibale dans le modeste cirque Delvaux. Le clown blanc George Foottit, sommé de renouveler ses numéros par le directeur du cirque, a l'idée de s'associer avec Kananga dans un duo de clown blanc autoritaire et de clown noir souffre-douleur, qui prendra le nom de Chocolat. Le duo comique est très bien accueilli par le public et Delvaux commence à faire des affaires. Engineer and inventor Robert Fulton (Richard Greene) comes to New York in 1807, where he meets tavern keeper Pat O'Day (Alice Faye). O'Day comes to strongly support Fulton and his visionary steamship after lodging at her establishment. O'Day's longtime suitor, Charles Browne (Fred MacMurray), opens his own shipyard to assist the dapper engineer by building Fulton's innovative steamboat. With financial assistance from Chancellor Robert L. Livingstone (Henry Stephenson) and additional investments from O'Day and her business acquaintances, Fulton eventually obtains all the financing needed to finish his revolutionary paddle steamer. After a shipwright named Regan (Ward Bond) has a run-in with Fulton, Regan attempts to turn every local deck hand and sail-powered passenger boat operator against the engineer, exploiting their fear of losing their livelihoods to a steam-powered vessel. In the end, against much adversity and additional interference from Regan, Fulton finally completes his steamboat and launches her to great success, silencing the critics and doubters who had previously labeled his venture "Fulton's Folly".

In 1593 London, William Shakespeare is a sometime player in the Lord Chamberlain's Men and poor playwright for Philip Henslowe, owner of The Rose Theatre. Shakespeare is working on a new comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Suffering from writer's block, he has barely begun the play, but starts auditioning players. Viola de Lesseps, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who has seen Shakespeare's plays at court, disguises herself as "Thomas Kent" to audition, then runs away. Shakespeare pursues Kent to Viola's house and leaves a note with the nurse, asking Thomas Kent to begin rehearsals at the Rose. He sneaks into the house with the minstrels playing that night at the ball, where her parents are arranging her betrothal to Lord Wessex, an impoverished aristocrat. While dancing with Viola, Shakespeare is struck speechless, and after being forcibly ejected by Wessex, uses Thomas Kent as a go-between to woo her. Wessex also asks Will's name, to which he replies that he is Christopher Marlowe.

The story begins in 1823 as the elderly Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) attempts suicide by slitting his throat while loudly begging forgiveness for having killed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) in 1791. Placed in a lunatic asylum for the act, Salieri is visited by Father Vogler (Richard Frank), a young priest who seeks to hear his confession. In 1968 Australia, Gail and Cynthia head into town for a talent contest and their young sister, Julie is forbidden to go because she has a child and is too young, until she bribes a fellow neighbour to take her into town. An alcoholic, Irish talent scout, Dave Lovelace, is scolded by his boss for being late despite him sleeping in his car that is near work. After the girls lose the talent contest, even with Julie coming in, Dave gives Gail her guitar back and as Dave is about to leave, Julie hands him a piece of paper, showing that the troops need singers for Vietnam. Soon, Dave goes to make a call and he says they have been accepted a spot to audition in Melbourne. Back at their place, Gail, Cynthia and Julie's mother tells him he can take them but Julie until Julie's father tells him not to worry about her. Advised by their grandmother, they meet up with their cousin Kay, who had been living in Melbourne for 10 years. She rejects the offer of joining them, but later changes her mind and meets up at their uncle's place. After days of training their moves, they are almost ready until Julie gives Cynthia a letter from her fiance that he is going to call it off. Despite that, they manage to audition very well and Kay comes up with the group's name, The Sapphires, after looking at Cynthia's engagement ring.

Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is a Parisian poet and swashbuckler with a large nose of which he is self-conscious, but pretends to be proud of. He is madly in love with his "friendly cousin" (they were not actually related as cousins), the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet); however, he does not believe she will requite his love because he considers himself physically unattractive, because of his over large nose. Soon, he finds that Roxane has become infatuated with Christian de Neuvillette (Vincent Pérez), a dashing new recruit to the Cadets de Gascogne, the military unit in which Cyrano is serving. Christian however, despite his good looks, is tongue-tied when speaking with women. Seeing an opportunity to vicariously declare his love for Roxane, he decides to aid Christian, who does not know how to court a woman and gain her love.
