Darr: A Violent Love Story (Hindi: डर, Urdu: ڈر, translation: Fear) is a 1993 Indian romantic thriller directed by Yash Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. It stars Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla and Shahrukh Khan in the lead roles. It is the second film in which Shahrukh Khan played the role of a villain, and it earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Villain.
In 1993, Shahrukh Khan won acclaim for his performances in villainous roles as an obsessive lover, respectively, in the box office hits, Darr and Baazigar. In Khan's entry in Encyclopædia Britannica's "Encyclopedia of Hindi Cinema" it was stated that "he defied the image of the conventional hero in both these films and created his own version of the revisionist hero." Darr marked his first collaboration with renowned film-maker Yash Chopra and his banner Yash Raj Films, the largest production company in Bollywood.
Darr was later remade in Kannada as Preethse and in English as Fear. Shahrukh Khan celebrated 20th anniversary of the release of Darr on 24 December 2013. The film has attained classic status over the years and is regarded as one of Chopra's best.
Synopsis
Kiran (Juhi Chawla) is a college student who is on her way home for Holi break one year when she hears a man serenading her across the campus in Simla. Her heart swells as she assumes that her boyfriend, Sunil (Sunny Deol), has come to meet her and escort her home. Unfortunately, it isn't Sunil, but Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), a classmate with a crush on her. The opening number, Jaado Teri Nazar, sets the tone for Darr, in which Rahul pursues Kiran with increasingly desperate vigor, much to the chagrin of Kiran, Sunil, her brother Vijay (Anupam Kher) and his wife Poonam (Tanvi Azmi) with whom Kiran lives.Actors

The story line draws its inspiration from A Place in the Sun. Roop Rathore (Shahrukh Khan) is a singer in Bombay just like his father (Anupam Kher), who is now sick and needs immediate medical care. One day, while he is singing at Ajay Narang's (Naseeruddin Shah) hotel, Ajay's sister Reshma (Ramya Krishnan) falls in love with Roop. Reshma is a spoiled girl and Ajay looks through all of her wishes. Unfortunately, Roop is in love with a doctor named Pooja (Pooja Bhatt). Meanwhile, Reshma is obsessed with Roop, and asks her brother to call him again to sing in their hotel. But when she sees that all the girls are flattered over Roop, she gets very angry, and asks him to sing only for her now onwards. But Roop would rather work for rival Patel (Shri Vallabh Vyas) than take this offer. Ajay's obsession with keeping his sister happy at all costs comes into play and Patel is brutally beaten by him until he agrees to throw Roop out of his hotel. Desperately in need of money for his father's operation, Roop has no option but to agree to Reshma. Roop breaks up with Pooja.
