Voici le temps des assassins (French for "Here is the time of the assassins") is a 1956 French film directed by Julien Duvivier and starring Jean Gabin and Danièle Delorme. The title is a line of Matinée d'ivresse - part of Illuminations by Arthur Rimbaud. The film was released as Deadlier Than the Male in the USA and as Twelve Hours to Live in the UK.

Synopsis

In Les Halles, in the heart of Paris, the restaurateur André Chatelin (Jean Gabin), leads an uneventful life until the arrival from Marseille of Catherine (Danièle Delorme), the daughter of his ex-wife Gabrielle (Lucienne Bogaert). She tells him her mother is dead and that she is without resources. Chatelin welcomes her under his roof - then marries her. Gérard (Gérard Blain), a young student that Chatelin looks upon as a son, becomes Catherine's lover, and she sets him at odds with Chatelin. She asks him to kill the restaurateur. He refuses. She kills him. Having discovered that Gabrielle is still alive, declined and drug addicted, Chatelin realises the darkness of Catherine's soul who has always lied to him.

Curfew bells are ringing at night in Paris, while a man and his drunken girlfriend Jacqueline walk down the street. Pierre Gilieth comes out of house #25 looking very frightened, both Pierre Gilieth and Jacqueline accidentally collide while consumed in their distraction. Pierre Gilieth decides to walk away but leaves a streak of blood on Jacqueline's dress. Immediately, she realizes her dress is stained with blood and gasps. The film cuts to his peering through Venetian blinds in Barcelona. A detective follows him around town, while Pierre Gilieth meets with fellow Frenchmen in a bar, who pick his pocket to give his identifications away to the detective. When Pierre Gilieth finds out he tries to fight the thieves, but then refuses to have the police investigate the matter.

Au Québec, François Paradis retrouve la civilisation après trois années passées dans la forêt. Maria Chapdelaine est de retour chez les siens, après un mois passé à la ville. François rencontre par hasard le père de Maria, puis celle-ci, pour laquelle il éprouve " du sentiment ". Paradis est heureux de retrouver la rude mais sympathique ambiance des villageois québécois. Les Chapdelaine font la veillée, en compagnie d'Eutrope Gagnon, voisin de la famille, autre soupirant de Maria, mais celle-ci pense à François. Paradis repart pour la chasse aux fourrures. Lors d'une autre veillée, Maria rencontre Lorenzo Surprenant, un jeune homme de la ville qui se sent attiré par elle. Eutrope est dépité, et Maria encore plus troublée quand Paradis fait irruption à la même veillée. Plus tard, au cours d'une fête, Maria danse successivement avec ses trois soupirants. La vie s'écoule doucement, avec son lot de fêtes et de labeurs.
