Death in Venice (original Italian title: Morte a Venezia) is a 1971 Italian-French drama film directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Dirk Bogarde and Björn Andrésen. It is based on the novella Death in Venice, first published in 1912 as Der Tod in Venedig by the German author Thomas Mann.
Synopsis
The protagonist, Gustav von Aschenbach, travels to Venice for health reasons. There, he becomes obsessed with the stunning beauty of an adolescent Polish boy named Tadzio who is staying with his family at the same Grand Hôtel des Bains on the Lido as Aschenbach.Actors

Retired American professor (Burt Lancaster) lives a solitary life in a luxurious palazzo in Rome. He is confronted by a vulgar Italian marchesa (Silvana Mangano) and her companions: her lover (Helmut Berger), her daughter (Claudia Marsani) and her daughter's boyfriend (Stefano Patrizi) and is forced to rent to them an apartment on an upper floor of his home. Évocation de la vie de Louis II de Bavière, depuis son couronnement à l'âge de dix-huit ans et demi jusqu'à son internement et sa mort à quarante. On y découvre la complicité presque amoureuse qui le lie à sa cousine Sissi (la jeune impératrice d'Autriche-Hongrie) qui est à deux doigts de parvenir à lui faire épouser sa sœur Sophie malgré le peu d'attirance qu'il a pour celle-ci, son entichement déraisonnable pour la musique de Richard Wagner, dont il devient le très généreux mécène au point de lui faire construire un opéra, les circonstances qui l'amènent à céder aux penchants qui lui seront funestes : son goût du rêve, du post-romantisme, des garçons (son palefrenier devenant son chambellan et homme de confiance très intime), des châteaux de contes de fées, pour l'édification desquels il dépense des fortunes et dans lesquels il fuira les dures réalités de son temps (à savoir : l'irrésistible unification allemande autour de la Prusse de Bismarck qui vassalise tous les autres royaumes ou principautés germaniques, Bavière y compris) en s'imaginant, entouré d'une garde rapprochée de serviteurs, qu'il est encore vrai roi en son royaume. Jusqu'à ce que le gouvernement effectif de Munich l'extirpe de son rêve et l'interne au château de Berg… où il meurt dès le lendemain de son arrivée en tentant, dans des circonstances jamais vraiment élucidées, de s'évader.

The film centers on the Essenbecks, a wealthy industrialist family who have begun doing business with the Nazi Party. Visconti's retelling of the Electra story starts with Sandra/Electra (Claudia Cardinale) returning to her ancestral home in Italy - and reviving an intimate involvement with her brother (Sorel) which troubles her naive husband (Michael Craig) - on the eve of an official ceremony commemorating the death of her Jewish father in a Nazi concentration camp. As ever with Visconti, he is ambivalently drawn to the decadent society he is ostensibly criticising; and Armando Nannuzzi's camera lovingly caresses the creaking old mansion, set in a landscape of crumbling ruins, where the incestuous siblings determine to wreak revenge on the mother (Bell) and stepfather (Ricci) who supposedly denounced their father.

The film is the story of a wandering tramp who has an affair with the wife of a restaurant owner. The two then conspire to murder her husband and attempt to live happily ever after. The catch is built into the title of the book, however, and the long arm of the law rings again to disrupt the couple’s already guilt-wracked life, ironically convicting the tramp for an accidental death despite his being absolved of guilt in the actual murder.

Oreste Jacovacci from Rome and Giovanni Busacca from Milan meet each other during the call to arms at the start of World War I. Although completely different in character, they are united in their lack of idealism and their desire to avoid any danger and get out of the war unscathed. They and a varied group of civilians and fellow soldiers (including the prostitute Costantina, played by Silvana Mangano) go through many ups and downs during their training, battles and rare moments of leave. They are considered "inefficient" due to their limited military valour and so are made message-runners to the staff, a very dangerous job. Having succeeded in their mission, a sudden change in which side hold which trench leaves them in enemy territory, where they are captured by the Austrians wearing Austrian uniforms they had found in a barn.

Un vieil homme, accompagné de son grand nigaud de fils, est agenouillé devant la tombe de son épouse, morte après avoir mangé des champignons empoisonnés. Au bout d'un an, ils finissent par trouver une très jolie jeune femme, sourde et muette. Pour réunir plus d'argent et améliorer leur habitation (une pauvre baraque en zone industrielle), ils organisent un faux suicide de la jeune épousée, du sommet du Colisée. Malheureusement, celle-ci glisse sur une peau de banane et meurt réellement.
