Death of a Man in the Balkans (Serbian: Smrt čoveka na Balkanu, Смрт човека на Балкану) is a 2012 Serbian black comedy film with elements of drama written and directed by Miroslav Momčilović. Following showings on the film festival circuit throughout summer 2012, the film had its Serbian premiere on 16 November 2012, after which it went into general theatrical release.

Synopsis

An introverted loner who composes music for a living (Nikola Kojo) commits suicide in a Belgrade apartment in front of his web camera.

Former university literature professor Teodor "Teja" Kraj (played by Branislav Lečić) is now a manager of a big publishing house whose workers are just about to go on strike. During the 1990s Teja was highly involved in overthrowing the regime of Slobodan Milošević. One day a strange man entered his office carrying a big suitcase. Teja was sure this man was a writer when he gave Teja four books ready to be published. After a short conversation Teja found out that these books were actually his. Teja thought this was a joke when stranger finally introduced himself as Luka Laban (played by Bora Todorović), a former officer of State Security. He also found out that Luka followed him for ten years, day after day, in order to make the daily report about his movements. After Luka retired he put all his daily reports together and wrote four books about Teja's movements for last ten years.

The plot takes place in the small town of Tešanj in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, two years after the Bosnian War. The town is overridden by corruption, prostitution and organized crime. People of Tešanj live in peace, though the war scars are visible everywhere in town, as well as in people's souls. After the war, the population of Tešanj consists almost exclusively of ethnic Bosniaks. Ethnic Serbs now live in surrounding villages.
