Deepavali is a 2007 Indian Tamil romance film written and directed by Ezhil fame Thulladha Manamum Thullum and produced by Thirupathi Brothers, the Tamil film production company owned by brothers N. Subash Chandrabose and noted director, N. Lingusamy and was founded in 2006. Starring Jayam Ravi and Bhavana in lead and Raghuvaran, Lal and Vijayakumar in supporting roles. The shooting of the film finished in December 2006, with shooting locations were canned in India and in Oman, for the picturization of a song. The film released worldwide on 9 February 2007. Deepavali has been remade into Oriya in 2010 as Dil Tate Deichi directed by Sanjay Nayak and starring Sabyasachi Mishra and Priya Choudhury, and in Bengali in 2013 as Deewana directed by Rabi Kinagi and starring Jeet and Srabanti Chatterjee. It was also Dubbed in Hindi as Billu Bachchan : Ek Diljala and in Telugu as Paga.

Synopsis

Billu (Jayam Ravi) is the son of Mudaliar (Vijayakumar). Mudaliar is much loved and respected by people of his locality and Billu is almost like a foster son to every person in the locality.

Sakthi (R. Sarathkumar) and his best-friend Thangamani (Goundamani) are taxi-drivers in Mumbai. Sakthi fights for the Tamil community against the local rowdies who want to expel them from their area. The Tamil association of Mumbai prepares the 25th anniversary function so the association's presidents invite the pillars of the association but only one person doesn't respond for the invitation : Karpagavalli, the wife of the late founder Sandanapandian. The presidents go to Karpagavalli's village Pasumpon to invite her but they are driven out from the village. In fact, Karpagavalli (Srividya) and her relatives (Sivaranjani, Kavitha and Kokila) are held prisoners by the heartless Duraipandi (Raghuvaran) in his palace. Under pressure, Duraipandi finally lets Karpagavalli go to the function in Mumbai. In the meantime, the police officers force the Tamil community to leave their place but they refuse. So the police officers kidnap and rape the young girls under the influence of Amara Settu (K. Rajpreeth). Sakthi turns berserk, he kills all the police officers and the main antagonist Amara Settu who created conflicts between the Tamil people and Hindi people. Therefore, Sakthi becomes a hero for the community and they ask him to flee instead of surrendering. By chance, Sakthi and Thangamani take the same train as Karpagavalli. Karpagavalli asks them to come to her village and she compels Sakthi to become the palace's protector. Later, Sakthi and Thangamani try to leave the village but Karpagavalli stops them. In the process, Karpagavalli was heavily wounded by Duraipandi's henchmen.

Shiva (Githan Ramesh) is the only son of a rich businessman (Avinash). He grows up surrounded by money and he is not cared for by his parents, due to his mother dying when he was a young boy and his father is business-minded and only cares about his money. Shiva and his friends are a playful bunch, they do not study and they mainly do lots of sport. Priya (Saloni), who also goes to the college (the college was created and run by Shiva's family) that Shiva goes to, is the daughter of a cow herder and a gangster Mayandi (Lal). Priya keeps her distance from Shiva, but as the film progresses it is inevitable that they become friends. Their friendship then develops into romance, but this love is opposed by both their parents. Both their parents try to separate them, they try to get them married of to different people. They eventually run away together, and a hit man is after Priya's life (hired by Shiva's father). In a confrontation with the hit-man Shiva gets wounded and defeats the hit-man, he then storms into his father's office and throws the hit-man at him. He then informs his father of his wedding in front of the district court. His father turns up with a large battalion of police officers, while Shiva turns up with a much large number of students. The film ends with their wedding successfully happening, and Mayandi gives his blessings.

Two families stay in identical bungalows, adjacent to each other, tracing their friendship to over forty years. Marudhamalai (Arjun), a police constable, goes to work in the village of Nachiapuram after passing his police exams and getting a merit.
