Synopsis
Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) travaille comme électricien sur la plateforme Deepwater Horizon située dans le golfe du Mexique. Entre Mike Williams et son patron Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell), l'entente est parfaite car le premier connaît le professionnalisme du second. Il ne fait pas confiance en revanche à la société locataire dirigée par Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich), qui ne pense qu'au profit au détriment de la sécurité de toute l'équipe. Une mauvaise manœuvre technique, motivée par l'argent, provoque un effroyable accident. Alors qu'une éruption de pétrole se produit et que le puits s'enflamme, Mike et ses collègues vont tenter de sauver la plateforme et leurs vies.Actors

In October 1991, the commercial fishing boat Andrea Gail returns to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with a poor catch. Desperate for money, Captain Billy Tyne (Clooney), convinces the Andrea Gail crew to join him for one more late season fishing expedition. The crew heads out past their usual fishing grounds in the Grand Banks, leaving a developing thunderstorm behind them. Initially unsuccessful, they head to the Flemish Cap, where their luck improves. At the height of their fishing the ice machine breaks; the only way to sell their catch before it spoils is to hurry back to shore. After debating whether to sail through the building storm or to wait it out, the crew decides to risk the storm. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester is a confluence of two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane, which the Andrea Gail crew underestimates.

In New York City's Central Park, people begin committing mass suicide. Initially believed to be caused by a bio-terrorist attack using an airborne neurotoxin, the behavior quickly spreads across the northeastern United States. Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher in Philadelphia, hears about the attacks and decides to go to Harrisburg by train with his wife, Alma. They are accompanied by his friend Julian and Julian's eight-year-old daughter Jess. Julian's wife is stuck in Philadelphia but is expected to meet them in Harrisburg. The train loses all radio contact en route and stops at a small town. They receive word that Philadelphia has been attacked by the toxin and Julian's wife was not able to get on the train to Harrisburg. Julian decides to go look for her, leaving his daughter with the Moores while he hitches a ride. However, the town has already been hit by the toxin. Succumbing to it, the driver and Julian both commit suicide.
