A group of five renowned detectives, each accompanied by a relative or associate, is invited to "dinner and a murder" by the mysterious Lionel Twain. En pleine prohibition, Claire, une jeune veuve, tente de reprendre les affaires de son compagnon avec la complicité de Walker. Une opération de trafic de travailleurs clandestins à la frontière mexicaine échoue lamentablement. Un américain, Kibby propose au couple une association et le trio se lance dans la contrebande d'alcool. Ils utiliseront pour ce faire un bateau voguant dans la baie de San-Francisco, le Lucky Lady. L'affaire n'est pas si simple puisqu'il faut compter avec la mafia dirigée par l'inquiétant McTeague et aussi par des gardes côtes incorruptibles. La première opération réussit, le trio dépense son argent dans un hôtel de luxe. Les relations entre les trois personnages tournent vite au ménage à trois. Mais Claire pense à son avenir, et sait qu'une fois l'argent dépensé, ils n'auront plus rien, il leur faut donc refaire une nouvelle grosse opération, mais cette fois McTeague n'est pas décidé à se laisser faire et compte bien éliminer ce trio qui le gène dans son propre trafic. On va donc vers une confrontation majeure où tous les moyens vont être bons pour éliminer l'adversaire.

Jill Johnson (Carol Kane) is babysitting the children of Dr. Mandrakis (Carmen Argenziano) at their home. When the children are asleep, Jill receives a telephone call from a man who asks her if she has checked the children. At first, Jill dismisses the telephone calls as a practical joke; however, as the calls become more frequent and threatening, Jill becomes frightened and decides to call the police, who promise to trace the caller if Jill keeps him on the telephone line long enough. Jill, frightened to extreme measures, arms herself as she receives one final call from the nefarious stalker. Soon after the conversation, Jill receives a call from the police, only to find out that the stalker is calling from inside the house. A light comes on at the top of the staircase, and Jill sees the stalker's shadow. She immediately runs to the front door to scream for help.

Miles Harding is an architect who envisions a brick shaped like a jigsaw puzzle piece that could enable buildings to withstand earthquakes. Seeking a way to get organized, he buys a personal computer to help him develop his ideas. Although he is initially unsure that he will even be able to correctly operate the computer, he later buys numerous extra gadgets that were not necessary for his work, such as switches to control household appliances like the blender, a speech synthesizer, and a microphone. The computer addresses Miles as "Moles", because Miles mistyped his name during the initial set-up. When Miles attempts to download data from a mainframe computer at work, the computer begins to overheat. In a state of panic, Miles pours a nearby bottle of champagne over the machine, which then becomes sentient.

LAPD detective Sgt. Lloyd Hopkins (Woods) discovers the brutal murder of a young woman. Her body hangs over her bed, and her blood is splattered all over her apartment. Hopkins notices a great deal of feminist literature with titles like Rage in the Womb on her bookshelf. He also sees two classified ads for anonymous sexual encounters. When he returns home, his 8-year old daughter wakes up and begs him for a story. He launches into a profane description of one of his cases, much to the girl's delight. His wife orders him to stop, and they have an argument over the inappropriateness of his stories. Frustrated, he calls up his buddy Dutch Pelz (Durning), and they go on a stakeout, which culminates with Hopkins shooting the suspect. Hopkins asks Dutch to stay at the scene and file the paperwork so that he can take the suspect's voluptuous girlfriend home and have sex with her.
