Don 2 (also known as Don 2: The King is Back) is a 2011 Indian action crime thriller film and the second installment of the Don franchise, directed and co-written (with Ameet Mehta and Amrish Shah) by Farhan Akhtar. The film was produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar, and is a sequel to 2006's Don. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Om Puri, Boman Irani and Kunal Kapoor, with Hrithik Roshan in a cameo appearance. The film's plot picks up at the end of Don, beginning in Malaysia and moving to Europe. Don, now king of the Asian underworld, plans to take over the European drug cartel. Don 2 marked Akhtar's return to directing after nearly five years. It was filmed in India, Thailand, Germany, Malaysia and Switzerland.

Before its release, Don 2 faced copyright concerns. It was released on 25 December 2011 by Reliance Entertainment in 2D and 3D formats, which included dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu. The film had a positive-to-mixed critical reception in India and a generally positive reception overseas. It has been praised for its action, direction and cinematography (exemplified by Shah Rukh Khan's performance), although its pace and music were criticised. Don 2 was shown at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. The film received a number of awards, including two Filmfare Awards: Best Sound Design and Best Action. Don 2 ended up with a final gross collections of ₹2.1 billion (US$32 million) including all versions in 100 Days worldwide.

Synopsis

The film opens five years after the ending of the first film, with Don (Shahrukh Khan) narrating the story. The European drug cartel bosses meet in the French Riviera to discuss a new threat emerging from Asia: Don is jeopardising their business by undercutting their prices, and the bosses decree that Don must die. Living in Thailand for the last five years, he goes to a remote settlement to pick up a shipment of cocaine. Instead of the expected uneventful transaction, Don fights his way out. He returns to Malaysia, surrendering to Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and Inspector Malik (Om Puri). Don is sentenced to death and sent to prison, where he meets old rival Vardhaan (Boman Irani). He offers Vardhan a partnership, and they escape from prison after poisoning the other inmates.

Shekhar Subramanium (Khan), a game designer who works for the London-based Barron Industries, has delivered a number of commercial failures; an irate Barron (Tahil) gives him his last chance to develop a successful game. To impress his sceptical son Prateek (Verma), and upon the request of his wife Sonia (Kapoor), Shekhar uses his son's idea that the antagonist should be more powerful than the protagonist. His colleague, computer programmer Jenny (Goswami), uses Shekhar's face as a model for that of the game's protagonist G.One (Technically Good One and in Hindi Jeevan, which means life), while the shape-shifting antagonist Ra.One (Technically Random Access Version One and in Hindi Ravan, a mythical demon) is made faceless. Another colleague, Akashi (Wu), implements the characters' movements. The game, named Ra.One, contains three levels, the final level being the only one in which either character can be killed. Each character possesses a special device – the H.A.R.T (Hertz Amplifying Resonance Transmitter) which gives them their powers. Upon reaching the last level, the characters gain a gun with one bullet; the other character can be killed by this bullet but only if his H.A.R.T is attached.
