Down Home is a 1920 American silent drama film written, directed, and produced by Irvin Willat and starring Leatrice Joy and James Barrows. The film is based on the novel Dabney Todd, by F. N. Westcott. It was distributed by the independent film distributor W. W. Hodkinson.

An early surviving Leatrice Joy feature at the Library of Congress. The film is available on DVD from Ioffer.com

Synopsis

Nance Pelot fait vivre son père alcoolique et elle-même en jouant du piano dans une auberge appartenant à Larry Shayne. Chet Todd, le fils d'un commerçant, est amoureux de Nance, mais sa réputation pâtit de sa profession, et la mère de Chet est contre cette idylle. Nance hérite de sa mère une petite ferme. Shayne découvre que cette propriété a de la valeur, il cherche à faire perdre cet héritage à Nance. Après une série de mésaventures, Joe a arrêté de boire et Chet a sauvé la ferme des projets de Shayne. Quand Nance vend la ferme, elle en tire un revenu confortable, et le respect de sa future belle-mère.

"Big John" McMasters (Clark Gable) and "Square John" Sand (Spencer Tracy) are two down-on-their-luck oil wildcatters who join forces. In September 1942, during World War II, Susan Cahill (Dianne Foster), art director for an ad agency on Madison Avenue run by her fiance, is jealous of his business flirtation with a client's daughter to secure a deal. She accepts an invitation to dinner on Long Island from agency artist Alexander "Alec" Austen (Alan Ladd). Susan is disturbed by Alec's obvious feelings for her, but accepts a lunch date the next day anyway. After she leaves, Alec receives a telegram to report for active duty in the U.S. Navy but decides not to tell Susan as their relationship grows. Just before reporting for duty, Alec takes Susan home to meet his mother, a Quaker, revealing to them his hope to marry Susan—and his call up. His mother is hurt that Alec did not disclose his military obligation and saddened that he has disregarded the pacifist tenets of his upbringing. Susan admits she loves Alec, but will not break her engagement.
