Whitaker plays Eddie Presley, a former successful owner of a chain of pizza restaurants who, against the wishes of his father (Joe Estevez) and mother (Whitaker's real-life mother Barbara), decides to sell his business in the pursuit of living his dream of becoming an Elvis Presley impersonator, going so far as to legally change his last name to "Presley." After several years, he's living in his van and desperate for work. After his boss (Lawrence Tierney) fires Presley from his night security job for sleeping (with the Polaroids to back it up), he finally lands a gig in a seedy Hollywood bar (managed by Roscoe Lee Brown). After a technical malfunction, he proceeds to bare his soul to the audience in an improvisational one man show, where he admits to spending time in a psychiatric hospital after suffering a mental breakdown (Bruce Campbell and Quentin Tarantino make cameos as orderlies at the hospital). Meanwhile, in his personal life, Presley has to deal with a cheating girlfriend who ends up working in pornography, while remaining oblivious to a co-worker who truly loves him.

The film begins with Leatherface bludgeoning a young woman, Gina, to death with a sledgehammer before beginning the process of cutting off her face in order to make it into a mask. Gina's sister, Sara watches from a nearby window. Leatherface hears Sara outside, and after she flees, he briefly checks outside before going back to work. Some time later, Michelle and her boyfriend Ryan, a couple that constantly argues, both traveling through Texas, pass through a security checkpoint near the excavation of a large number of butchered bodies, a cop approaches them and interrogates them, shortly after they leave and reach the Last Chance Gas Station. At the station, they meet a hitchhiking cowboy named Tex and the station's perverted owner Alfredo. Tex shows Ryan a route on the map that can get them to a town. A fight soon breaks out between Tex and Alfredo when Tex finds the latter spying on Michelle while she uses the station restroom. As Michelle and Ryan flee from the station in their car, they witness Alfredo apparently killing Tex with a shotgun.

The film events take place in a futuristic, cyber-punk New York City, where convicted felon Roger Mason (Gary Daniels) is serving a sentence and is locked away in a high security prison facility, where Cryonics are applied to some of the inmates, including Mason himself, to keep them in a state of suspended animation. Mason, despite all the security measures applied at his confinement facility, manages to escape repeatedly to see his daughter, which is the only reason why he's making attempt after attempt to break free. However, the authorities are able to catch him and bring him back every time to serve even a longer sentence as punishment for his attempts to escape. Since he's being cryonically frozen to serve his time for years at a time, he remains practically the same age while his daughter grows older normally. As more and more time keeps being added to his original sentence, his escape attempts become more of an obsession rather than a goal.
