Ek Thi Ladki (There Was A Girl) is a 1949 Hindi action comedy film by director Roop K. Shorey. It had the famous Punjabi song "Laara Lappa Laara Lappa Layi Rakhda" by Lata Mangeshkar, G. M. Durrani and Mohammad Rafi. The music director was Vinod, with lyrics by Aziz Kashmiri and story by I. S. Johar. The film starred Meena Shorey (as Meena) who became famously known as the "Larra Lappa" girl following the release of the film, and Motilal (as Ranjeet). Other co-stars were Bharat Bhushan, I. S. Johar, Agha, Shakuntala, and Kuldip Kaur.

Synopsis

The movie is based on Meena (Meena Shorey) who is running away from two men, who are blackmailing her for a crime she did not commit. Along the way she meets Ranjeet (Motilal), who is engaged to be married to the daughter of his boss but falls in love with Meena.

Roma (Meena Shorey) is on her way home after celebrating with her friends at Asha's (Yashodra Katju) place when she is attacked by two robbers who try to steal her purse. She faints as one of them brandishes a knife. Motilal (Motilal) and his friend Hiralal (Majnu) are driving through there and scare away the robbers. After wondering what to do with the unconscious women, they take her to Moti’s house to render treatment. Roma makes a phone call to her father Seth Madanlal (K. N. Dhar) to tell him her whereabouts, but he is too angry to know the reason why she is there except to ask her the address. On arriving and seeing her with two men, he gets angry and starts shouting which wakes up Motilal’s father Seth Ramlal (Romesh Thakur) and he appears downstairs. The two fathers fight loudly and Roma is taken away by her father.

The central character is the Post Master who is given a mysterious cheque for ₹500,000 to be given to anyone who will use it to benefit the people of the village. There is a postman who pretends to be lame and is secretly rich and may have sent the cheque. Then there is the postmaster's wife, who is sick and would rather use the money to cure her illness, and his beautiful daughter Seema (played by Sadhana), who has a crush on the village school master. Meanwhile all the greedy and influential people of the village are busy trying to convince everybody why they are most deserving of the money; they include the village priest, the land lord, the money lender, the village doctor and the school master, who is by far the most respected. They all decide democracy is the best means and decide to hold an election where the winner gets the money. The movie is a satirical look at democracy through various twists and turns in the plot, interweaved with a simple love story.

Advocate Rai Bahadur is a respected lawyer, who has no children. He has an affair with a prostitute Meher who then becomes pregnant with his child. His wife also get pregnant at the same time and both his wife and Meher give birth to baby boys in the same hospital and same day. When Rai Bahadur came to know that Meher also gave birth to his son, he went to meet her in hospital but Meher warns him of dire consequences if he will not give his son his due rights. She blackmail him and ask her to change her baby with his wife's baby. Helpless Rai Bahadur ask a nurse to change the babies and offered money. Nurse agreed but later her conscience does not allow her to do the wrongful. She did not change the babies but said Rai Bahadur that she has changed the babies. Now Rai Bahadur thinks that the boy in his house "Kishore" is from prostitute Meher and the boy with Meher is from his wife. He start dislike his son "Kishor" in his Bungalow and star liking the other one "Pran". He somehow throw "Kishore" with his mother out of the bungalow and bring "Pran" mistaking "Pran" as from his wife. Now "Kishore" raised in poor life with both Meher and Mrs Rai Bahadur and "Pran" raised in bungalow. Both become boxers in the same boxing club. Kishore always betters Pran but denied his right every time due to Pran's unfair tricks.
