Synopsis
Inventor Frederick Smith's wife dies during the birth of their fourth baby, Ronnie, leaving the family in the care of their faithful housekeeper Emma. Twenty years later, after Smith's inventions have made the family rich, the affable Ronnie, who is Emma's favorite, arrives home from college, announcing that he wants to quit school and become a pilot. The other Smith children, Bill, Gypsy and Isabelle, have all grown into spoiled adults, but Emma lovingly indulges them all, making excuses for their bad behavior to their father and everyone else.Actors

The film is a romantic melodrama about two childhood friends who grow up to be soldiers in Germany. One of the friends, Leo (Gilbert), becomes infatuated with Felicitas (Garbo), the wife of a powerful count (a marriage about which Felicitas neglects to inform Leo). The count calls for a duel of honor with Leo, but insists that it be done under the false pretense that the quarrel was due to angry words exchanged between the two at a card game in order to protect the count's reputation. Leo kills the count in the duel, but then is punished by the military, being sent away to Africa for five years.

Son père, chef d'un clan sur la côte ouest de l'Écosse, étant décédé en mer lors d'une tempête, Marget MacTavish console les autres membres du clan malgré son chagrin. Quand Marget et Jamie Campbell, un jeune pêcheur, se fiancent lors d'une cérémonie traditionnelle, M Campbell écrit à la Comtesse de Dunstable pour lui confesser que, des années auparavant alors qu'elle était la nurse de Jamie, elle avait dit qu'il était mort afin de l'élever pour elle-même. La Comtesse arrive avec son second mari, qui convainc Marget que, pour le bien de Jamie, elle devrait rompre les fiançailles. Malgré les protestations de Jamie, Marget use de son autorité de chef pour lui ordonner de la quitter. Marget part en mer pour quitter la région, mais son vieux bateau, peu en état de naviguer, commence à couler. Pitcairn sonne l'alarme, puis prie pour Marget pendant que Jamie prend le canot à moteur du yacht de sa mère pour la sauver. Les parents de Jamie acceptent finalement le mariage.

Harry Van (Clark Gable), an American World War I veteran, tries to reenter show biz and ends up in a faltering mentalist show with an inept, aging alcoholic, Madame Zuleika (Laura Hope Crews, who also appeared in Gone with the Wind as Aunt Pittypat). While giving performances in Omaha, he is courted by Irene (Norma Shearer), a trapeze artist, who claims to come from Russia and hopes both to replace Harry's drunken partner in the show and be his lover. They have a romantic night, but he is suspicious of Irene's overstated flights of fancy. Harry, keeping Zuleika, and Irene's troupe board trains going in the opposite directions the next day.
