Synopsis
William Karel rend hommage au cinéma américain et plus particulièrement au film noir en inventant une nouvelle fiction à partir des films emblématiques du Cinéma noir américain. Des acteurs mythiques de l'âge d'or hollywoodien, tels Kirk Douglas, Mickey Rooney ou Ben Gazzara, grâce à leur participation bienveillante au nouveau scénario, redonnent vie au New York des années 30 et 40, sur fond de prohibition, de mafia et de guerre des gangs.Actors

Mary Evans (Anne Nagel) moves to a small town in Indiana to take a teaching job in the local school. She checks in at the Noble Hotel when a young bellhop named Shockey Carter (Mickey Rooney) brings her suitcase upstairs to her room. When Shockey comes back downstairs, he encounters some classmates coming out of a dance. One of them, Roger Townsend, drops a quarter on the floor and tells Shockey to "Buy your old man another quart." Miss Evans, meanwhile, is shocked to find a drunk man (Frank Shields) in her hotel room, whom the hotel manager introduces as John 'Jack' Matthews Jr., the dairy owner's son.

Cricket West (Garland) is a hopeful actress with a pair of vocal cords that bring down the house. Young "Lord" Geoffrey Braemer (Freddie Bartholomew) is supposedly an English aristocrat. In fact, he is an orphan and willing accomplice to con artists Jim Hampstead (George Zucco) and Doris Clandon (Gale Sondergaard), who took him in when his parents died in a train wreck. He conveniently faints in a jewelry store, distracting the employees and allowing Jim to steal a valuable necklace. However, an astute insurance investigator catches him. He is sent to Russell-Cotes, a mercantile marine school, one of many vocational schools run by Dr. Barnardo's home for orphaned boys, with the warning that if he does not behave himself, he will be transferred to a reformatory.
