Synopsis
Partie gravir le Cho Oyu, dans l'Himalaya, Johanna, étudiante en médecine à Berlin, tombe dans une crevasse et découvre deux enfants morts. Sauvée par ses coéquipiers tibétains, elle est reconduite dans un monastère et fait la connaissance de Tempa, un garçon de huit ans. Celui-ci est recherché par la police chinoise, car il est témoin d'une tentative d'assassinat sur son ami, l'Enfant Sacré, la réincarnation de Bouddha, que la Chine tente d'éliminer. À la demande de ses sauveurs, Johanna accepte de le conduire jusqu'à Lhassa pour confier l'enfant à Meto. Une fois arrivée à destination, elle doit cette fois emmener un groupe d'enfants vers l'Inde pour qu'ils aient une vie meilleure auprès du dalaï-lama. Avec des policiers à leurs trousses, ils entament un long voyage, en passant notamment par le col de Nangpa La.Actors

Lors de son ascension du Cho Oyu, l'un des vertigineux sommets de l'Himalaya, Johanna, étudiante en médecine, tombe dans une crevasse. Salvatore Granata is a rather poor man who lives with his wife, son and daughter in Calabria in Italy. One day Salvatore decides to move to Belgium to work in the coal mine of Waterschei as a gastarbeider. His family will stay in Italy as Salvatore will only be in Belgium for three years. He hopes to earn much money in a rather small timeframe so he can buy a forge for his son Rocco who is now still a 9 year old boy. After a year, Salvatore decides his family should be with him, so they also move to Belgium. They soon discover the life of a gastarbeider is difficult: they have to live in some kind of barracks, they are neglected by the Belgian people and they do not earn much. They are astonished when they hear Salvatore signed a contract of five years and male children of gastarbeiders are ought to work in the mines as soon they leave high school. Rocco meets Helena, the daughter of the local grocer shop. However, the man is a racist and forbids his daughter to play with Italian boys.

Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. Philippe is a former teacher who left everything to become a shepherd in the French Pyrenees. After the construction of a nuclear power plant near his sheep, he decided to leave the area.
