It premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival but was not distributed to the United States for two years until it played in New York City in 2002. Deplechin adapted the screenplay with regular collaborator Emmanuel Bourdieu from a short story by Arthur Symons of the same name from his book Spiritual Adventures. It stars Summer Phoenix as Esther and Ian Holm as her friend and teacher, Nathan Quellen.
Synopsis
Esther Kahn vit dans le East End, à Londres, à la fin du XIX siècle. Elle travaille dans la couture avec sa famille juive, mais ça ne lui plait pas. Retranchée du monde, sujet des moqueries de ses frères et sœurs, elle demeure indécise sur son avenir. Après avoir assisté à une pièce de théâtre, elle décide de devenir actrice. Figuration, rôle secondaire, doublure l'amènent, au fur et à mesure, à pouvoir vivre de ses propres moyens. Sous la houlette de Nathan Quellen, un vieil acteur raté, elle améliore son jeu mais il lui manque encore d'avoir vécu.Actors

In Heaven (which resembles a modern police headquarters), angels are tasked with ensuring that mortals on Earth find love.
