The film follows the stories of Ben and Sara, an older couple who must revisit their past with the D.E.I., and Seth and Haley, a younger couple entering their first registered and long-distance relationship with the D.E.I.
Synopsis
In the near future, the Department of Emotional Integrity (D.E.I.) issues relationship scores that affect the standings of everyone in society. In California, Ben and Sara are an older couple reconciling their past relationship while Seth and Haley are a younger couple registering for their first relationship with the D.E.I. Ben is denied a job at Origin, a design company, due to a low relationship score while Sara secures a business loan for a new cafe due to her high relationship score. Ben is later walked out on by his date, also due to his low relationship score. Henry then convinces Ben to make an appointment at the D.E.I. with his ex-girlfriend Sara to boost his score. Meanwhile, Seth and Haley are separated as they head to different colleges in California. At the D.E.I., Ben and Sara clash due to their conflicting recounts of their past relationship. However, they reconcile and each sign off on 50-50 responsibility. Seth and Haley then register for their first and also long-distance relationship with the recurring D.E.I. agent, Randall. This boosts Ben's score to land the job as a designer at Origin.Actors

A straight bass player in an "all gay band" called The Jerk-Offs, Nick O'Leary (Michael Cera) is a teenager from Hoboken, New Jersey. Nick is still heartbroken after his girlfriend, Tris (Alexis Dziena), broke up with him three weeks, two days, and 23 hours ago, and continues to make for her "breakup" mix CDs. Thom (Aaron Yoo) and Dev (Rafi Gavron), his gay bandmates who both hate Tris, convince Nick to perform at a club because his favorite band— the legendary, publicity-shy indie band Where's Fluffy? —is performing somewhere in New York City that night. Norah Silverberg (Kat Dennings) attends the same high school as Tris, Convent of the Sacred Heart, and though Norah and Tris dislike each other, they have a mutual friend named Caroline (Ari Graynor). Norah has not met Nick, but shares his taste in music based on recovering his mix CDs after Tris discards them in the trash. That night, the three girls end up at Arlene's Grocery on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where The Jerk-Offs are playing. Norah asks Nick to pretend to be her boyfriend to show up Tris. Norah kisses him, unaware that he is the ex-boyfriend of Tris. Caroline gets drunk and Norah wants to take her home, but Nick's bandmates (who see Norah as a potential new girlfriend for him) offer to take Caroline home so Norah and Nick can spend time together trying to find the show.

High school student Kale Brecht and his father Daniel get into a serious car accident while driving home from a fishing trip, and Daniel dies. One year later, Kale remains inconsolable after his father's death. Near the end of the school year, he is reprimanded by his Spanish teacher, Señor Gutierrez, and when Gutierrez brings up Kale's father, Kale attacks him. For this assault, he is sentenced by the sympathetic judge to a three-month house arrest period with an ankle monitor and a proximity sensor, which prohibit him from roaming beyond the boundaries of his house and yard. He then learns that one of the police officers monitoring him is his teacher's arrogant cousin. Initially, he satiates his boredom by playing video games, but shortly after, his mother Julie cancels his subscriptions to the iTunes Music Store and Xbox Live, and cuts the power cord of his television in order to get him to learn a hard lesson.

Nate Norman (Jonathan Daniel Brown) lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho with his younger brother and their single mom who works multiple jobs to support them.
