Synopsis

La professeure d'histoire AP, Grace Wesley, une fervente chrétienne évangélique, remarque que l'une de ses étudiantes, Brooke Thawley, est retirée à la suite du décès accidentel de son frère. Brooke, très impliquée dans ses études, remarque l'attitude remplie d'espoir de Grace et demande où Grace trouve son optimisme. Grace répond "Jésus" et Brooke commence à lire la Bible elle-même. Alors que Grace donne des conférences sur Mahatma Gandhi et Martin Luther King, Jr., Brooke demande si leurs enseignements pacifiques ont un rapport avec le récit biblique du sermon sur la montagne. Grace répond par l'affirmative et relie des parties des Écritures à ses enseignements. Un élève envoie immédiatement un message à ses parents au sujet de la classe et la réaction qui en résulte attise la colère de la directrice Kinney. Elle réprimande Grace en disant que la foi de l'enseignante obscurcissait son jugement. Grace est ensuite traduite devant la commission scolaire, qui l'informe qu'une action en justice sera intentée contre elle car elle a violé la séparation de l'église et de l'État. The film revolves around four friends, all young men going nowhere with their lives. Tom and Johnny have dead-end jobs (one works as a telemarketer and aspires to be an actor, the other is a supermarket clerk), while Willie and Fernando (who prefers the name "Vinny") are unemployed and use people to get what they want. They go for a "guys' night" out on the town from the Bronx to Manhattan, and fall victim to various disasters, (Tom wrecks his car, Willie gets the guys thrown out of a party, etc.) most of which they bring on themselves. During their "night out", their relationships with one another become strained as the various situations lead to conflict between them, and by the end of the movie they have all separated.

The film begins as Marcus (Eddie Murphy) enters Chantress, the company that he works for as an advertisement executive. It is quickly established that he is quite the ladies' man, as he tells his assistant to send flowers to nine different women, with cards reading "only thinking of you." When he enters his office, Nelson (Geoffrey Holder), one of the creative minds also in Marcus' department, shows Marcus a re-cut he's done of one of the ads they've been working on. Marcus tells Nelson, who's very creative but also very risqué and overtly sexual with his style, that he must re-edit the ad, as some of the material may be offensive to women and may also cause problems with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Nelson reluctantly agrees, then leaves.

Ex-convict Michael "Blade" Brown (Christopher "Play" Martin) is released from jail, and told by his parole officer (Rick Ducommun) that the condition of his release is satisfactory graduation from high school. A mishap results in their pictures being swapped on their permanent school records. In effect, Blade is surprised to find out that he is being placed in gifted classes, while Duncan is shocked to be placed in minimal classes with substandard conditions and miscreants for classmates.

Through the course of the film, several flashbacks are shown involving the Skuggs brothers, including (in the beginning of the film) the drug-overdose death of their mother Ella (Khandi Alexander), the non-fatal shooting of their drug-addicted musician father, Arthur Romello "A.R." Skuggs (Clarence Williams III) (ultimately at the hands of the man they would later work for—Gus Molino (Abe Vigoda), and a scene where Roemello is offered a full scholarship to Georgetown. Roemello, as a teenager (Dulé Hill) avenges his father’s shooting by shooting and killing Sal Marconi (Raymond Serra), a business partner of Gus’s.
