Synopsis
Klauss Dritteman est un chanteur subversif de RDA. Les autorités, qui ne le supportent plus, le poussent à passer à l’Ouest. Avant de partir, Klaus reçoit la clé d’un coffre-fort, dans lequel son père a déposé des papiers personnels. Arrivé en RFA, il est accueilli par une maison de disques. Mais il est aussi critique envers le capitalisme que le socialisme. Il découvre les papiers de son père et part à sa recherche. Il est aidé par Emma, une journaliste française.Actors

The film begins with Joe Kavanagh at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, relaying an experience from his past. He states the ritualised greeting: 'My name is Joe and I'm an alcoholic.' In a karaoke bar Maggie (Crissy Rock), a woman with a troubled past, meets South American Jorge and has a drink with him. During their conversation we learn about both their past lives; in flashback we learn that she witnessed her father beating her mother, and later was beaten several times by her ex-partner (Ray Winstone). She has four children by four different fathers and all of her children are in care. Jorge is a Paraguayan who is afraid to return to his own country for fear of persecution there.

Bob, le personnage principal, vit avec sa femme Anne et sa fille Coleen dans une banlieue misérable de Manchester. En dépit de sa situation pour le moins précaire, Bob tient par-dessus tout à acheter une robe de communion neuve pour sa fille, afin de ne pas perdre la face devant le voisinage. Dans ce combat pour la dignité de sa famille, il va prendre de terribles risques, se heurter à la cupidité et à la violence mais aussi redécouvrir la fraternité et la solidarité.
