Dans la ville de Rome, le riche industriel Lombardi (Ennio Balbo ) est enlevé. Le capitaine Murri (Leonard Mann ), qui surveillait Lombardi, manque l'interpellation des suspects. Il est alors chargé de l'enquête et comprend rapidement qu'il s'agit d'une conspiration d'envergure nationale, les rançons versées servant à financer une entreprise terroriste contre le gouvernement italien. Il expose son opinion au sénateur Leandri (James Mason), qui est impliqué dans l'affaire. Il tente de faire transférer Murri dans la petite ville de Brennero sous couvert d'une promotion pour empêcher la poursuite de l'enquête. Protégé par un ministre intègre (Enrico Maria Salerno), Murri reste à Rome. Lorsque sa fiancée est assassinée à sa place dans un attentat le visant, Murri décide de rendre les coups.

Advertising executive Roger O. During the Korean War, Joe Moran, a U. S. Army sergeant, was convicted for striking a colonel. He was imprisoned in Germany. In the military prison he encountered his former company commander Captain Ross, and a fellow soldier who served under Joe called Vermont. They had been imprisoned for black marketeering and hijacking army vehicles. Joe agrees to escape with them. The escape is organised by a former French Foreign Legionnaire named "Katanga". Things go according to plan until Katanga kills a curious German police officer. Frightened and disgusted by the murder, Joe escapes by himself, abandoning his friends and Katanga, who are recaptured.

In 1975, Harry Morgan (Telly Savalas) and Sylvester (Sly) Wells (Robert Culp) come up with a plan to recover six million dollars of Nazi gold, lost since the end of World War II. The story begins during the Third Reich. A crew of Nazi soldiers is driving a cargo truck through the Black Forest when they are stopped by a road block of SS commandos. The SS hijack the truck and its cargo killing its passengers. Thirty-four years later Harry Morgan is driving his Rolls Royce home in London where a repossession agent is waiting to confiscate the car. Harry gives him the keys as he boasts that he will soon own another one. He enters his family's apartment where he has a brief conversation with his wife Meredith (Lorna Dallas) about their debts and the building that is soon to be sold. As he looks through the bills he finds a letter addressed to him from someone in his past requesting to meet with him.
