Synopsis
Amador Corso, un paysan pauvre de Galice, a été incarcéré pour incendie volontaire. A sa sortie de prison, celui qui est resté célibataire retourne vivre avec Benedicta, sa vieille maman, et reprend une vie paisible dans les montagnes galiciennes. Une caravane d'hommes et de chevaux se prépare à accompagner un vieux cheikh à travers les montagnes de l'Atlas vers sa famille lointaine, auprès desquels il souhaite vivre ses derniers jours. Lorsque la caravane arrive dans les zones les plus inhospitalières de la montagne, certains hommes renoncent au voyage et refusent de s'exposer au danger, car personne ne connaît de chemin viable. Le vieux cheikh s'éloigne du groupe pour s'isoler et meurt plus tôt que prévu. Seuls deux petits voyous décident de continuer le chemin avec la dépouille, trouvant ainsi enfin un sens à leur vie, ainsi qu'un prédicateur religieux. Ils devront alors affronter les dangers des rivières, des chemins escarpés et des ennemis cachés.

Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) is the aging player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs hockey team in the fictional Federal League. A perennial loser for years, the team's manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) has resorted to extreme cost-cutting techniques and embarrassing promotional antics to keep local interest alive. Dunlop, while not particularly talented as either a player or coach, is a skilled con man, and regularly manipulates the team to his own advantage. During a hopeless season, the Chiefs pick up the Hanson Brothers, bespectacled violent goons with childlike mentalities, complete with toys in their luggage. Horrified at being given players who seem stupid, immature, and unreliable, Dunlop initially chooses not to play them.

Short Eyes is set in an unnamed prison in New York City, whose inmates are predominantly black or Puerto Rican. One day, Clark Davis, a young, middle-class white man accused of raping a young girl, arrive.
