Forbidden Nights is a 1990 television film directed by Waris Hussein. The film is based on the article The Rocky Course of Love in China, written by Judith Shapiro. The film was shot in Hong Kong and stars Melissa Gilbert and Melissa Sue Anderson, who both co-starred in Little House on the Prairie. The film also marked the American debut of Robin Shou, who wouldn't act in another American film, until Mortal Kombat in 1995.

Synopsis

Set in Red China in 1979, the film focuses on Judith Shapiro, an American teacher who falls in love with Liang Hong, a Chinese radical, trying to bring political reform to his homeland. She puts all her wishes and dreams away to fit into his ideals, but soon, trouble starts to come.

This romantic story is told through the viewpoint of the children in the story, the adults playing only supporting roles. Daniel Latimer (Mark Lester) befriends the troublesome Ornshaw (Jack Wild). However, when Daniel falls in love with Melody Perkins (Tracy Hyde), the boys' friendship becomes jeopardized as Ornshaw grows jealous of the amount of time that Daniel gives her. The adults attempt to dissuade them, but Daniel's and Melody's determination leads Ornshaw to have a change of heart. Their classmates gather together at one of the children's hideouts to 'marry' the couple, with their discovery leading to a final showdown between children and teachers.

Ravic (Anthony Hopkins), is an Austrian doctor who helped Jews escape from the Nazi regime. He was tortured in a concentration camp.
