En route chez leurs beaux-parents, les Monroe, accompagnés de leur petite fille Peri, se disputent en voiture. Afin de faire une pause sur leur trajet, ils s'arrêtent à une aire d'autoroute où l'enfant est victime d'un accident et se casse le bras. Les parents, Ray et Joanne, accourent aux urgences les plus proches. Alors que sa femme accompagne Peri à un examen au scanner, Ray s'endort dans le hall d'accueil. Mais lorsqu'il se réveille, le cauchemar commence. En effet, son épouse et sa fille sont portées disparues et l'hôpital ne retrouve aucune trace de sa famille dans l'établissement.
Synopsis
Le film débute par une dispute de couple en voiture. Dans la voiture se trouvent Ray, Joanne et Peri Monroe, leur fille. Peri a un casque sur ses oreilles où elle écoute de la musique afin de ne pas pouvoir écouter l'altercation entre ses parents. Dans la voiture, Ray reproche à Joanne que ses beaux-parents ont été désagréable avec lui durant le repas de Thanksgiving (États-Unis) et Joanne lui reproche de ne plus être le même homme qu'au début et que leur couple bat de l'aile.Actors

A Los Angeles Police Department veteran 9-1-1 operator, Jordan Turner (Berry), receives a call one night from a teenage girl, Leah Templeton (Evie Thompson), fearing for her life as a man breaks into her home. Jordan calmly advises her to conceal herself upstairs, but when the call is disconnected, Jordan calls Leah back, a decision that later costs Leah her life, as the ringing phone gives her location away to the intruder. Jordan attempts to dissuade him from going further over the phone. He responds "It's already done" and hangs up, leaving her distraught. The next day, Jordan sees a television report confirming that Leah has been murdered. Emotionally affected by the incident, Jordan tells her boyfriend, Officer Paul Phillips (Morris Chestnut), that she can no longer handle field calls.

Paul (John Leguizamo) is a projectionist in a Detroit theater who is reading about the 16th century disappearance of the Roanoke Colony when the lights suddenly go out in the theater. He finds that all the staff and patrons have mysteriously vanished, leaving only their clothes and non-biological parts behind. He comes across a security guard who is holding a flashlight. As Paul had a headlamp on for his reading they deduce that people holding sources of light are protected against whatever dwells in the darkness. The guard's flashlight goes out, and he vanishes. As Paul investigates, his headlamp goes out as well.

Trevor Reznik is a machinist whose insomnia has led to his becoming emaciated. His appearance and behavior keeps his coworkers away, and they eventually turn against him when he is involved in an accident that causes his coworker Miller to lose his left arm. Trevor, who was distracted by an unfamiliar coworker named Ivan, is blamed for the accident. No one at the factory knows of Ivan and there are no records of him. Trevor seems to find peace only with Stevie, a prostitute with genuine affection for him, and with Maria, a waitress at an airport diner he frequents. He is haunted by brief flashes of recurring imagery, and things such as his car cigarette lighter take on a menacing air. Ruby Weaver (Marisa Tomei) is weary of her long history of failed relationships with men when she meets Sam Deed (Vincent D'Onofrio) in a park. But after the two fall in love, Ruby becomes suspicious of Sam's past, his obsession with a "Chrystie Delancey", and "causal effect." Under pressure from her, he finally explains that he is really from the year 2470 and is what he calls a "back traveler." Ruby initially ignores this story, considering it yet another case of male nerdy weirdness, but after Sam's persistence, apparent conviction, and growing agitation, she begins to wonder. Finally she takes him to see her therapist Meg Ford (Holland Taylor). Ruby becomes worried as to Sam's sanity when he reveals that everything he has done was a deliberate attempt to change her life. In the end, both Deed and Ford turn out to be time travelers and the fatal accident that would have killed Ruby is avoided.
