The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.

Frank Ripploh se réveille. Encore nu, il va sur le palier pour voler le journal de la voisine, mais sa porte se referme derrière lui. Il doit alors demander à sa voisine de passer par son balcon pour rentrer chez lui. En classe, il raconte aux écoliers sa mésaventure du matin, en mimant le passage d'un balcon à l'autre. On le voit ensuite, en manteau de cuir, aller dans des toilettes où des hommes guettent le passage d'autres hommes en se masturbant. Il s'enferme dans une cabine où, assis, il corrige des cahiers tout en regardant par une ouverture un homme qui se caresse les fesses. Ce dernier sort, un autre homme prend sa place et introduit son sexe dans le glory hole.

There are many continuations from The 400 Blows; discharged from the army as unfit, Antoine Doinel seeks out his sweetheart, violinist Christine Darbon. He has written to her voluminously (but, she says, not always nicely) while in the military. Their relationship is tentative and unresolved. Christine is away skiing with friends when Antoine arrives, and her parents must entertain him themselves, though glad to see him. After she learns that Antoine has returned from military service, Christine goes to greet him at his new job as a hotel night clerk. It is a promising sign that perhaps this time, the romance will turn out happily for Antoine. He is, however, quickly fired from the hotel job. Counting the army, Antoine loses three jobs in the film, and is clearly destined to lose a fourth, all symbolic of his general difficulty with finding his identity and "fitting in".
