Synopsis
À Paris, dans les années 1950, Sabine Gravières est une antiquaire de renom, elle vit seule avec sa fille depuis que son mari l'a quittée pour poursuivre librement sa carrière de diplomate, sa fille, adolescente libre et insolente, aime un garçon et attend bientôt un enfant de lui; Sabine Gravières décide de reconquérir son mari et pense lui faire croire que l'enfant serait né de leurs retrouvailles, il s'avère que deux enfants naissent bientôt dans la famille pour leur grand bonheur.Actors

Véra Vronsky forme avec Paulo et Désormeaux un trio d'escrocs agissant dans les hôtels de luxe. Le mode opératoire est sensiblement toujours le même, Véra joue les séductrices, et se plaint qu'on ne veuille pas lui reprendre à sa juste valeur un bijou très cher qu'elle montre à sa victime. L'homme se propose alors de mener à bien la transaction, et empoche le bijou que Paulo remplacera par une copie. La victime ne voulant pas perdre la face donnera le lendemain à Véra le montant de la valeur du vrai bijou... Un jour Véra tombe réellement amoureuse de Pierre, l'une de ses victimes. Le trio se sépare, mais les deux escrocs peinent à retrouver une remplaçante de la valeur de Véra. Véra de son côté s'est mariée avec Pierre. Désormeaux et Paulo la retrouvent par hasard, ils s'invitent à une réception donnée par le couple, trouvent le moyen de voler tous les bijoux des invités et s'enfuient. Véra et Pierre tentent de les poursuivre mais tombent en panne, alors, effondrée, Véra avoue à Pierre son passé. Quand le lendemain matin le couple regagne la propriété, ils ont la surprise de voir Paulo redistribuer les bijoux aux invités. En effet Paulo par amitié pour Véra a trahi son complice. Mais il le rejoindra malgré tout sur un bateau en partance pour les États-Unis, non sans avoir chapardé le portefeuille de Pierre.

Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is a Parisian poet and swashbuckler with a large nose of which he is self-conscious, but pretends to be proud of. He is madly in love with his "friendly cousin" (they were not actually related as cousins), the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet); however, he does not believe she will requite his love because he considers himself physically unattractive, because of his over large nose. Soon, he finds that Roxane has become infatuated with Christian de Neuvillette (Vincent Pérez), a dashing new recruit to the Cadets de Gascogne, the military unit in which Cyrano is serving. Christian however, despite his good looks, is tongue-tied when speaking with women. Seeing an opportunity to vicariously declare his love for Roxane, he decides to aid Christian, who does not know how to court a woman and gain her love.

Scant days before her wedding to Vittorio, Nelly (Deneuve) has a change of heart and runs away. As Vittorio pursues her through Caracas, she turns for help first to Alex (Roberts), a previous employer, and then to Martin (Montand), a middle-aged French man she meets by chance. Martin drives her to the airport, where she gets a plane ticket to Paris. Returning by boat to his peaceful lonely life on an island off the coast, Martin is surprised and dismayed to find that Nelly has made her way there ahead of him. Having killed a noble too friendly with his wife Charlotte, Nicolas Phillibert flees from France to South Carolina, where he does well and wants to marry a rich man’s daughter. To do so, he will first have to return to France and get a divorce. On landing at Nantes in 1793, the Reign of Terror is raging and he is arrested by the revolutionaries. Taken to a republican ceremony in the cathedral, he saves the life of a royalist girl, Pauline, and escapes with her to an isolated castle. There he finds Charlotte, claiming to be a widow, with Pauline’s brother Henri. A prince arrives from London to organise resistance in the Vendée and is struck by Charlotte, who was told by a gypsy that she would become a princess. She admits that she is married to Nicolas, so the prince has him drugged and carried into Nantes city hall to get a divorce. Put back on his ship for America, Nicolas’ divorce certificate blows overboard. Diving into the Loire, he swims ashore to find Charlotte again, but she has left with the prince for neutral Germany. Pursuing her across France in the throes of the Austrian invasion, he catches her at the frontier. Fifteen years later, Nicolas is made a prince by Napoleon and the gypsy’s prediction comes true.

As airman Adrien Dufourquet embarks on an 8-day leave in Paris to see his fiancée, Agnès, two South American Indians steal an Amazon statuette from a museum and force Professor Catalan, the curator, into their car. Catalan was Agnès' father's companion on an Amazon expedition during which her father died. Catalan believes that the statuette is one of three which hold the secret to an Amazon treasure. Adrien arrives in time to see the Indians abducting Agnès, the only one who knows the location of the other statuettes, and he pursues them to the airport where he steals a ticket and boards the same plane.

Brigitte de Lénouville (Danielle Darrieux) est la veuve et l'héritière d'un très grand fabricant de bière. Aidée de Lestrange, son homme d'affaires, amoureux et ridicule, elle a déjà fondé dix œuvres importantes et est sollicitée d'en fonder de nouvelles. Pour elle, la fin justifie les moyens et, toutes ses brasseries étant hypothéquées depuis longtemps, elle fait disparaître des escrocs ou des gangsters pour financer ses œuvres charitables. Lestrange espère le mariage à la mort de la 12e victime, mais, en attendant, les gangsters sont invités successivement comme prétendants à la main de la riche veuve. Au fond du parc, autour d'un obélisque funéraire à la mémoire de son mari, des massifs d'hortensias de plus en plus nombreux recouvrent les corps des victimes.
