Synopsis
David Dunn, l'homme « incassable », se lance à la poursuite de « La Bête », la personnalité surhumaine de Kevin Wendell Crumb. Elijah Price, le « Bonhomme qui casse », en hôpital psychiatrique depuis dix-neuf ans après avoir commis des attentats pour révéler les pouvoirs de Dunn, attend cet affrontement depuis sa cellule. Cependant, le docteur Ellie Staple veut les réunir pour les libérer de ce qu'elle considère comme un délire et les convaincre que leurs capacités surhumaines ne sont qu'une illusion.Actors

Kevin Wendell Crumb souffre d'un trouble dissociatif de l'identité. Il échange régulièrement avec sa psychiatre dévouée, le docteur Fletcher, qui a déjà pu distinguer vingt-trois personnalités différentes s'exprimer à tour de rôle durant leurs conversations. Selon Fletcher, Kevin aurait subi des maltraitances et des humiliations au cours de son histoire et une 24 e personnalité, plus sombre et plus menaçante que toutes les autres, nommée « la Bête », demeure encore enfouie. Le docteur Fletcher met en exergue le fait que son patient s'est forgé ces nombreuses personnalités différentes dans un besoin existentiel de se protéger des autres. In New York City's Central Park, people begin committing mass suicide. Initially believed to be caused by a bio-terrorist attack using an airborne neurotoxin, the behavior quickly spreads across the northeastern United States. Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher in Philadelphia, hears about the attacks and decides to go to Harrisburg by train with his wife, Alma. They are accompanied by his friend Julian and Julian's eight-year-old daughter Jess. Julian's wife is stuck in Philadelphia but is expected to meet them in Harrisburg. The train loses all radio contact en route and stops at a small town. They receive word that Philadelphia has been attacked by the toxin and Julian's wife was not able to get on the train to Harrisburg. Julian decides to go look for her, leaving his daughter with the Moores while he hitches a ride. However, the town has already been hit by the toxin. Succumbing to it, the driver and Julian both commit suicide.

In a cat-filled mausoleum in Central City, Denny Colt, also known as The Spirit, receives a call from Detective Sussman about a major case that could involve the Spirit's arch-nemesis, The Octopus. The Spirit dons his costume and travels across rooftops while delivering a voice-over soliloquy about the city being his one true love. A woman (Kimberly Cox) is being mugged in an alley below. He manages to save her, receiving a knife wound that he barely seems to notice. The woman asks, "What are you?", with an arriving officer answering, "That's The Spirit". The Spirit runs away, catching a ride from Officer Liebowitz and heading toward the flats.

A deadly virus wipes out almost all of humanity in 1996, forcing remaining survivors to live underground.
