Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) is an expert gambler, has been for as long as he can remember, and has never lost a game. These skills bring him to the attention of the underworld don Ratan Das (Madan Puri), who is interested in hiring him to win large amounts of money from rich people and then influencing them into doing whatever he wants. Jai agrees to do so, and plays successfully, though unknowingly to entrap Nath (Jagdish Raj) who works for the government. After losing large amounts of money, he is blackmailed into revealing the blueprints of a top-secret military laser weapon that can hit any target within 50 miles. When the Indian police come to know of this, they assign the case to Inspector Vijay (also Amitabh Bachchan), who is asked to apprehend Jai at any cost. The only problem is that Inspector Vijay is Jai's look-alike, and is not at all a good gambler.

In the background of the rise of the International Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s, is a Montreal-based family of the Jaiswals, consisting of mom, dad, son, Prashant, and daughter, Jasbir. Due to differences, Mr and Mrs Jaiswal separate, leaving Jasbir with dad, and Prashant with his mom. Eventually Prashant and his mom travel to India, leaving father and daughter behind in Montreal. Mr. Jaiswal remarries, and brings his new wife to live in his home. Jasbir is told by her nanny that her mother & brother are dead. Back in India Prashant is sent to a boarding school and his father makes sure that none of Prashant's letters reach Jasbir, so that it would be easy on her part to get over emotional trauma. A poor peasant (Kapoor) from the village, who comes to the city in search of work, is looking for some water to quench his thirst. He unwittingly enters an apartment building, whose residents take him for a thief and chase him. He runs from one flat to the other trying to escape his predicament. Along the way, he witnesses many shady undertakings in the flats where he hides. Murad is a king and he makes awish that if a baby girl is born in his house, he will ensure that animals are not caged in his kingdom. The little Rajkumari is born afterwards to the Queen Veena and Murad keeps his promise of freeing the animals and visiting the temple of Eagle God with the newborn baby.Soon after the girl is born,without even allowing Veena to even get a glimpse of the newborn, Murad decides to take her on pilgrimage.On his way to the place via forest he is attacked by Kamal Kapoor who is sent by Pradeep to steal the treasury and kill Murad so that he can be the King, being next in line after Murad and all bodyguards of Murad are killed. Murad asks his elephant driver Ram Singh to take the baby away and give all the gold jewels in the elephant cast to the God Eagle.Ram Singh being an honest servant, decides to take the baby but is attacked so orders his elephant to take the cart and handover the baby to God Eagle. At the palace, Pradeep receives word that the Rajkumari and the treasure have vanished but that the king is dead. He announces that Ram Singh has betrayed his king and offers his baby girl Taramati to poor grieving Veena as compensation for her lost daughter. Ram Singh’s wife (Nirupa Roy flees with her young son Raju as their house is burned to the ground by Pradeep’s men.

Basant (Govinda) is a guy who gets what he wants, sneakingly. He is friends with Vasant. At an antique shop, Basant and Vasant see an antique duck made of glass. Basant purposely drops to break it because he cannot afford it. One day, Basant sees Priya (Priyanka Chopra) and is head over heels in love with her. She proceeds to draw a smiley face on the glass frame. Basant tries to run after her but he spots her earring. Meanwhile Vasnat wants to enter a music competition but on the way their car hits a girl on a bike, which is Priya. She is in hospital and requires A1B blood. However Vasant is there (because the people who knocked her over took Vasant's car so he chased them) Vasant has the correct blood type and donates blood to save Priyas life. However this small event leads to the cancellation of the competition. Vasant is unaware the girl Basant boasts about is Priya the girl he knocked over. When Priya wants to contact Vasant to thank him for the blood donation, she unknowingly calls Basant but he doesn't know it is the girl he wants. The next day, Basant and Vasant along with Satya and Prakash await the call but a music group calls insisting that Vasant must present himself there. Just after Vasant leaves, Priya calls, but says that Vasant must meet her at the Railway Station to Jodhpur. She is wearing a blue cap, has a blue top and is carrying an English novel. A call follows, and there is a problem with the boys so Vasant has to leave. When Basant sees it is the girl he wants, he plays a pretext he is Vasant instead. Basant goes home and finds his friend smoking and thinking about his guru because he is in hospital. One day, Priya calls Basant's (Vasant's) house but his mother picks up the phone. Her stupid sister blatanly says an old woman and the mother thinks they are referring to her, Basant takes the phone and speaks expletives unaware it is Priya. Vasant (the real one) goes for a music job, he has a cassette and meets Uncle ~Shakti Kapoor). He calls Priya to help him out. The plot thickens, when, just before Vasant goes for the interview Basant tells him to change his name to Ranjini Priya for good luck and he meets Priya. Both are unaware that Priya sees the boy who saved her life and Vasant (Ranjini Priya) donates blood to a girl he didn't know because he never see her.
