Le fatiche di Ercole (English: The labours of Hercules; English title: Hercules) is a 1957 Italian epic fantasy feature film (released in Italy in Feb., 1958) based upon the Hercules myths and the Quest for the Golden Fleece. The film stars Steve Reeves as the titular hero and Sylva Koscina as his love interest Princess Iole. Hercules was directed by Pietro Francisci and produced by Federico Teti. The film spawned a sequel, Hercules Unchained (Italian: Ercole e la Regina di Lidia), that also starred Reeves and Koscina.
Hercules made Reeves an international film star and effectively paved the way for the dozens of 1960s peplum (or "sword and sandal") films featuring oiled bodybuilders as mythological heroes and gladiators battling monsters, despots, and evil queens.

While travelling, Hercules is asked to intervene in a quarrel between two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, over who should rule Thebes. Before he can complete this task, Hercules drinks from a magic spring and is hypnotized by a harem girl who dances the "Dance of Shiva", loses his memory and becomes the captive of Queen Omphale of Lydia. The Queen keeps men until she tires of them, then has them made into statues. While young Ulysses tries to help him regain his memory, Hercules' wife, Iole, finds herself in danger from Eteocles, current ruler of Thebes, who plans on throwing her to the wild beasts in his entertainment arena. Hercules slays three tigers in succession and rescues his wife, then assists the Theban army in repelling mercenary attackers hired by Polynices. The two brothers ultimately fight one another for the throne and end up killing each other; the good high priest Creon is elected by acclaim.

Asparia, Queen of the Hellenes, has been captured by the Babylonians, but she manage to hide her identity and lives as a common slave in Babylon. La cité grecque d'Argos est victime d'un coup d'État ourdi par le tyrannique Acrisios, assisté de son complice Galenore. Le jeune Persée, héritier légitime du trône, ignore encore ses origines : il mène la vie d'un pâtre, bientôt amoureux d'Andromède, mais Acrisios l'enlève. Persée accourt jusqu'à la cité et découvre le nom de son véritable père, Céphée, et de sa mère Danaé. Acrisios apprend que Persée est en ville et lui impose une mission impossible : tuer Méduse, la monstrueuse Gorgone. Méduse ressemble ici à une plante à tentacules dotée d'un œil unique ; elle peut animer et contrôler les hommes qu'elle a changés en statues. Persée affronte aussi un monstrueux dragon. Le héros réussit grâce à l'épée et au miroir dont il s'est muni, afin d'éviter le regard pétrifiant du monstre. De retour à Argos, Persée réclame le trône, mais Acrisios refuse : une bataille s'engage au cours de laquelle le héros triomphe du tyran.

After the Trojan War, Glauco is the strongest man amongst the Greeks. His friend Pirro meets two men who offer him a large sum of money to persuade Glauco to sail towards unexplored shores. Pirro accepts the proposal and convinces Glauco with a trick: he hits him on his head.
