Synopsis

Plus de 30 ans d'homosexualité au cinéma. André Schäfer a parcouru l'Europe, l'Asie et les Amériques pour aller à la rencontre des réalisateurs et d'acteurs qui ont fait sortir du placard l'homosexualité. Y sont notamment interviewés Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho), Stephen Frears (My Beautiful Laundrette), le réalisateur allemand de Coming Out (1989), les réalisateurs français Jacques Martineau et Olivier Ducastel (Crustacés et Coquillages) et Patrice Chéreau, les acteurs Jean-Marc Barr, Ingrid Caven ou Tilda Swinton, la réalisatrice allemande Angelina Maccarone (Fremde Haut/Unveiled) ou le réalisateur indien Onir (My Brother… Nikhil).

Le documentaire retrace la vie de Glenn Milstead, dont le personnage de Divine a été sacré « plus belle femme du monde ». Petit garçon timide, jeune homme complexé, il découvre les bars gays puis le travestissement. Un voisin passionné de cinéma, John Waters, le fait tourner dans ses premiers films. Avec ses amis habilleur et maquilleur, Milstead crée le personnage excessif et scandaleux de Divine qu'il interprète dans les films Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs et Pink Flamingos. À la fin des années 1970, il se lance dans la chanson et fait plusieurs tournées aux États-Unis et en Europe. Il revient au cinéma en 1981 avec Polyester, puis dans Lust in the Dust de Paul Bartel et Wanda's Café. Peu après le succès de Hairspray, il meurt d'une crise cardiaque dans son sommeil.

The first of the three women portrayed in this documentary is the innovative dancer/mime/choreographer Lotte Goslar (1907-1997), who worked with Mary Wigman in pioneering modern dance, and choreographed productions by Bertolt Brecht. She developed her own style of expressive dance. In 1933 she left Germany and toured in Europe. Disgusted with Germany's Nazism she exiled herself in the United States. In one of her most famous solos, Grandma Always Danced, she was seen, first, as a baby, then as a bride, a mother and as an old woman. Goslar became a popular teacher of mime and body movement for actors. In the late 1940s, she taught in Los Angeles, where one of her pupils was Marilyn Monroe.
