Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story is an American TV film directed by Peter Levin. It was first released on April 7, 2003 in the United States. This movie is adapted from Liz Murray's autobiography, Breaking Night.

Synopsis

Thora Birch stars as Liz Murray, one of two daughters of an extremely dysfunctional Bronx family. As a young girl, Murray lives with her sister, their drug-addicted, schizophrenic mother and their father, also a drug addict who is intelligent, but has AIDS, lacks social skills, and is not conscientious. She is removed from the home and put into the care system as her father cannot take care of her. At 15 she moves in with her mother, sister and Grandfather who sexually abused her mother. After a run-in with her Grandfather she runs away with a girl from school who is being abused at home. After her mother Jean Murray (1954-1996) dies of AIDS, which she got from sharing needles during her drug abuse, she gets a 'slap in the face' by her mother's death and begins her work to finish high school, which she amazingly completed in two years, rather than the usual four. She becomes a star student and earns a scholarship to Harvard University through an essay contest sponsored by The New York Times.

After miraculously recovering from a bullet wound to the head, Gulf War veteran Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) returns to Vermont in 1992, suffering from periods of amnesia. While walking, he sees a young girl, Jackie (Laura Marano), and her alcoholic mother (Kelly Lynch) in despair beside their broken-down truck. Starks and Jackie quickly form a certain affinity; she asks him to give her his dogtags and he does so. He gets the truck started for them and continues on his way. Shortly after, a man driving along the same highway gives Jack a ride and they get pulled over by a policeman. The scene changes: Starks is found lying on the deserted roadside near the dead policeman, with a slug from the policeman's gun in his body. The murder weapon is on the ground nearby. Although he testifies there was someone else at the scene, he is not believed because of his amnesia. Starks is found not guilty by reason of insanity and is incarcerated in a mental institution.

Luis, âgé d'environ 45 ans, est professeur dans une université mixte d'Espagne dans les années 1970. Célibataire, Luis vit dans une vaste demeure aux allures de manoir jouxtée d'un grand jardin : il est le dernier héritier d'une riche famille et donne des cours purement pour se distraire. Luis fait les honneurs de sa demeure à Julia et Miguel, notamment sa collection d'armes à feu et ses disques de Wagner. Luis leur présente Jaime, un homme d'une trentaine d'années, qui vit chez lui. Luis entretient visiblement une relation particulière avec Jaime, qui semble se comporter avec lui comme un serviteur avec son maître, sans se définir comme tel, et sans être non plus son ami. Après un repas succulent, Luis conduit les deux jeunes gens à une chambre à la décoration chargée où ils dormiront dans le même lit pour la première fois. Julia et Miguel font l'amour tandis que Luis et Jaime passent la soirée de leur côté.
