This film was the first film to win the Photoplay Medal of Honor, a precursor of the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Synopsis
Mama Kantor est comblée car son jeune fils Leon montre un grand talent pour le violon. Après des années de pratique, Leon, devenu adulte, est devenu un violoniste renommé, ce qui lui permet de faire déménager sa famille du ghetto juif vers les beaux quartiers. Il demande en mariage la camarade de jeux de son enfance, Minnie Ginsberg, maintenant connue sous le nom de Gina Berg. Alors qu'il est au faite de sa carrière, la guerre est déclarée. Leon s'engage et est envoyé en France où il est sérieusement blessé au bras droit. Convaincu qu'il est handicapé à vie et ne sera plus capable de jouer, Leon rompt ses fiançailles avec Gina. Le cœur brisé, la jeune femme s'évanouit et Leon, se précipitant pour la retenir, l'attrape dans ses bras. Réalisant que sa force est revenue, Leon prend son violon et commence à jouer.Actors

Dick Melville (Powell) and June Blackburn (Keeler) meet during a naval review in New York Harbor. Though both come from Navy families, Dick aspires for a singing career and June, her father and brother both having been killed in the war, has vowed never to marry a Navy man. The storyline of the film follows several women who volunteer for the Canteen and who must adhere to strict rules of conduct, the most important of which is that while their job is to provide friendly companionship to and be dance partners for the (often nervous) men who are soon to be sent into combat, no romantic fraternization is allowed. One volunteer who confesses to only becoming involved in the Canteen in order to be discovered by one of the Hollywood stars in attendance, ultimately finds herself falling in love with one of the soldiers.

Richard Palmer Grant Dorcy, known as "Canary," (Powell) is an enlisted man in the United States Army. Stationed in the Hawaiian Islands, he has an friendly but argumentative relationship with his sergeant, Scrapper Thornhill (Pat O'Brien). Although he hates taking orders, Dick has no intention of becoming an officer. When General Fitts (Henry O'Neill) arrives at the base with his daughter Kit (Keeler), Dick is assigned to drive her to the reception that evening. Falling victim to the moonlit night, Kit and Dick miss the reception and attend a native luau instead. They are discovered in each other's arms by Lieutenant Biddle (John Eldredge), who is also in love with Kit. Biddle blames Dick for ruining Kit's reputation and Dick decides to desert. Scrapper begs Kit to straighten things out with Biddle.

Giulia, la fille d'un marchand de vins, est aimée de Tony Cafarelli, un membre de la Camorra. Giulia demande à son fiancé de la protéger, mais quand Tony tue celui-ci, elle s'enfuit terrifiée. Tony meurt des blessures que lui a infligées Chaumont pendant leur lutte, laissant le jeune couple en paix.
