Synopsis
Dans le Vermont, l'étudiant Ives Towner refuse d'épouser sa petite amie de longue date, Julie Weir, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait une carrière. Peu de temps après, Julie rencontre et se passionne pour le bel écrivain Michael Shaw, et ils se marient et déménagent à Paris. Des années plus tard, après la mort accidentelle de Michael, Julie et sa fille retournent dans le Vermont pour vivre avec sa tante et Julie trouve Ives, maintenant professeur, désintéressé de reprendre leur relation amoureuse.Actors

In the waning days of World War II, the United States Navy cargo ship Reluctant and her crew are stationed in the "backwater" areas of the Pacific Ocean. The executive officer/cargo chief, Lieutenant Junior Grade Douglas A. "Doug" Roberts (Henry Fonda), tries to shield the dispirited crew from the harsh and unpopular captain, Lieutenant Commander Morton (James Cagney). Eager to join the fighting, Roberts repeatedly requests a transfer. Morton is forced by regulation to forward his requests, but refuses to endorse them, which means they are always rejected. Roberts shares quarters with Ensign Frank Thurlowe Pulver (Jack Lemmon). Pulver spends most of his time idling in his bunk and avoids the captain at all costs, so much so that Morton is actually unaware that the ensign is even part of the crew.

Hal Carter (William Holden) is a former college football star, adrift and unemployed after army service and a failed Hollywood acting career. On Labor Day (September 5, 1955), he arrives by freight train in a Kansas town to visit his fraternity friend, Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), the son of a wealthy grain elevator owner, Mr. Benson (Raymond Bailey). Through her "Contacts and Contracts" company, Mae Swasey is busy scheming to bring couples together. It is not very rewarding financially, and Mae is in debt.
