The film's plot exhibits some differences from that of the novel by Ludlum. The undercover identity of Jason Bourne is simplified. In the book, David Webb, because of his amnesia, believes himself to be Jason Bourne and an assassin called Cain. In the film, the name Cain is left out. In the film, Carlos is shown to be responsible for killing Webb's wife and child, which is not the case in the novel. Alexander Conklin is accidentally shot by his own people when attempting to kill Bourne; in the novel he survives and appears in subsequent novels. In the book's ending, Carlos escapes in the confusion, whereas in the film he is gunned down at the last moment by Bourne/David Webb. Because Carlos is the primary antagonist of the original Bourne trilogy (although only The Bourne Supremacy had been published when the film was produced), this essentially ends the story with one film., 1h36

The film is set in 90 AD and concerns Jesus Christ's last surviving disciple, John of Patmos, and his writings and visions from the Apocalypse of John. Emperor Domitian has declared himself to be God and ruler over heaven and earth. The Christians do not recognize his divinity and face persecution from the Emperor. John has been imprisoned on Patmos, a mining prison, with many others. He writes out messages of his visions and sends them to the church in Asia. They send Irene to make sure John is alive and to confer with him in person. The movie depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation and links them to events happening to the church in Asia., 1h42

The film is set in British South Africa, in the province of Natal, in January 1879. The first act of the film revolves around the administrators and officials of Cape Colony, notably the supremely arrogant Lord Chelmsford and the scheming Sir Henry Bartle Frere, who both wish to crush the neighbouring Zulu Empire, which is perceived as a threat to Cape Colony's emerging industrial economy. Bartle Frere issues an impossible ultimatum to the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, demanding that he dissolve the Zulu Empire. Cetshwayo refuses, providing Cape Colony with a pretext to invade Zululand. Despite objections from leading members of Cape Colony's high society and from Great Britain itself, Bartle Frere authorises Lord Chelmsford to lead a British invasion force into Zululand.
