Synopsis
Devenu vieux, Stevens Brown se remémore son histoire, au milieu des tableaux représentant les personnages de sa jeunesse. Après une violente querelle avec son père et cinq longues années d’exil, il était revenu au village. Pour tous il avait été le bienvenu. Pour le révérend Nicolas Jones, il était l’enfant prodigue. Tous l’avaient accueilli, sauf son père. Maureen, une veuve encore jeune, l’avait recueilli. Il était devenu son amant. Mais sa flamme c’était Olivia, Olivia Atkins, sa belle cousine, dont la figure demeurait indélébile dans ses souvenirs tourmentés. Il y avait son frère simple d’esprit, Perceval, surpris à observer Olivia et Nora qui se baignaient. Lui-même avait cherché à séduire Olivia, même si c’était Nora qui lui manifestait de l’intérêt. Les drames s’étaient succédé. Un premier était survenu un soir de fête. Irène, la femme du révérend, s’était suicidée en se jetant du haut d’une falaise. Irène était stérile et se refusait à son mari. Ce dernier avait séduit Nora. Perceval le lui avait appris. Puis, par soir de tempête, Olivia avait rejoint Stevens sur la grève. Au petit matin, Perceval allait les découvrir étendu l’un au côté de l’autre et la jeune fille morte.Actors

A biracial 17-year-old boy named America (Philip Johnson), who has experienced a difficult life of foster care and sexual abuse, undergoes counseling with psychiatrist Maureen Brennan (Rosie O'Donnell) to help him come to terms with his painful past of childhood trauma, including growing up with (and abandoned by) a crack-addicted mother (Toya Turner) and being shuffled through a series of foster homes including the Harpers (with Mrs. Harper played by Ruby Dee and Reggie Harper by Tim Rhoze). The film starts with Maureen Brennan (Rosie O'Donnell) at a group home where she is giving a small introduction about the outlook for most of the group home children's futures (most would most likely end up either living on the streets, in jail, or dead). A young America, emotionally vacant and suicidal, comes to the attention of Brennan. When she (Dr. B) tries to talk to America, he refuses to give her any answers about his childhood. Eventually Dr. B helps him understand his troubled past in order to find the courage to move on and survive. Helps him to forgive and forget, in order to be able to move forward in life.
