Add to a movie listJew Suss: Rise and Fall (German: Jud Süss – Film ohne Gewissen) is a 2010 German drama film directed by Oskar Roehler, dramatising the creation process of the 1940 antisemitic Nazi propaganda film Jud Süß. It was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
In Germany the film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and, mainly because of the controversial subject matter, received mixed reviews. Nevertheless the German critics lauded the actor Tobias Moretti in his role as Ferdinand Marian. In 2011 cinematograph Carl-Friedrich Koschnick received the Austrian Romy award for cinematography.
Synopsis
Berlin, 1939. Joseph Goebbels, ministre de la propagande nazie, commandite un film qui, selon lui, doit présenter un haut niveau artistique tout en instruisant le peuple allemand contre la « juiverie ». Il choisit l'acteur de second rang d'origine autrichienne Ferdinand Marian pour interpréter le rôle-titre du film Jud Süss, rôle qui doit véhiculer tous les poncifs antisémites. Marian, initialement très réticent, accepte finalement le rôle. Grâce au succès du film, il devient malgré lui une vedette du cinéma du IIIe Reich. Mais la chute du régime entraîne aussi la fin de sa carrière et l'éclatement de sa famille car il restera irrémédiablement associé au plus grand film de propagande nazie.Actors

In 1967, the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, visits West Berlin to attend a performance at the Deutsche Oper. Angered at the Shah's repressive policies in governing Iran, a number of young Germans show up to protest his appearance. The German police and the Shah's forces attack the German protesters and one of them, Benno Ohnesorg, is shot and killed without provocation by Karl-Heinz Kurras.

In 1984 East Germany, Stasi Captain (Hauptmann) HGW XX/7, Gerd Wiesler, suggests to his superiors that he begin to spy on the playwright Georg Dreyman. Wiesler and his team bug the apartment, set up surveillance equipment in an attic and begin reporting Dreyman's activities. Dreyman had escaped state scrutiny due to his pro-Communist views and international recognition. Wiesler soon learns the real reason behind the surveillance: Minister of Culture Bruno Hempf covets Dreyman's girlfriend, actress Christa-Maria Sieland, and is trying to eliminate Dreyman as a romantic rival. While Wiesler's superior, Lt. Col. Anton Grubitz, sees an opportunity for advancement, Wiesler, an idealist, is horrified, asking Grubitz "Is this why we joined?" Minister Hempf coerces Sieland into having sex with him by exploiting her vulnerability as an insecure actress whose livelihood is dependent on state approval of stagecraft. After discovering Sieland's relationship with Hempf (through Wiesler's covert intervention), Dreyman implores her not to meet him again. Sieland flees to a nearby bar where Wiesler, posing as a fan, urges her to be true to herself. She returns home and reconciles with Dreyman, rejecting Hempf.

In Poland of early 1944, a Polish-Jewish shopkeeper named Jakob is summoned to the German headquarters after being falsely accused of being out after curfew. While waiting for the commander, Jakob overhears a German radio broadcast speaking about Soviet offensives. Returned to the ghetto, Jakob shares his information with a friend, sparking rumors that there is a secret radio within the ghetto. After hesitating, Jakob decides to use the chance to spread hope throughout the ghetto by continuing to tell the optimistic, fantastic tales that he allegedly heard from "his secret radio" and his lies keep hope and humor alive among the isolated ghetto inhabitants. He also has a real secret in that he is hiding a young Jewish girl who escaped from an extermination camp deportation train.

The story, drawn from La masseria delle allodole, the best-selling novel by Antonia Arslan, tells about the Avakian clan, an Armenian family living in Turkey and having two houses. The Avakians feel convinced that the rising tide of Turkish hostility on the horizon means little to them and will scarcely affect their day to day. The Avakians do not pay attention to the warning signs, and set about preparing for a family reunion with the impending visit of two well-to-do sons - landowner Aram, who resides in Turkey, and Assadour, a physician living in Venice. These illusions come crashing down when a Turkish military regiment crops up at the house, annihilates every male member of the family and forces the ladies to trek off into the Syrian desert, where they will be left to rot. With them goes one of the little boys of the family, who was dressed into a girl in order not to be killed. Meanwhile, a handsome Turkish officer (Moritz Bleibtreu) falls in love with Aram's daughter and makes an aggressive attempt to deliver her from certain death, even as the circumstances surrounding him attest to the astounding difficulty of doing so.
