It depicts the life of Joan of Arc, and is the first female embodiment of the Nazi Fuhrer figure in film. The press in Germany and abroad detected direct parallels between the presentation of France in 1492 and the situation in Germany in 1935.
Synopsis
La France pendant la guerre de Cent Ans. Les Français risquent de perdre la guerre depuis 92 ans contre l'Angleterre et des ennemis intérieurs. Seule la ville d'Orléans résiste bien encore ; c'est ici que se trouve le roi de France Charles VII. Pour discuter de conditions de paix acceptables, le roi envoie son émissaire Maillezais dans le camp ennemi, chez John Talbot et son allié Philippe III de Bourgogne. Mais Talbot refuse le compromis ; il préfère se préparer à la bataille finale. Son mépris est tel que, devant Maillezais, il jette les armes de sa famille d'origine française.Actors

Non loin de la frontière russo-chinoise, à Harbin. Depuis quelques jours, la ville de Mandchourie s'agite. Les puissances étrangères ont déployé des soldats ; les Chinois rencontrent l'Armée rouge, les Britanniques et les Japonais. On trouve aussi d'autres étrangers occidentaux. Trois d'entre eux décident de s'enfuir dans l'après-midi du 6 août 1928. Laudy, un ingénieur allemand, découvre avec un compagnon sur les murs un avis de recherche l'accusant d'espionnage industriel. Les Russes proposent 5 000 roubles contre son arrestation. Un commissaire soviétique se déplace dans la ville avec son groupe armé de mitrailleuses entre les gens en fuite avec leurs biens dans la chaleur étouffante. Les soldats britanniques déployés dans le quartier diplomatique de Harbin affichent un mépris sous couvert de neutralité.

In the Wołyń Voivodeship in eastern Poland, the German minority is oppressed by the Polish majority. The physician Dr. Thomas does not have any hospital available and his daughter Marie, who teaches at a German school, and needs an important operation, watches when her school is disseized by Polish authorities and demolished by an angry mob. Dr. Thomas protests to the mayor, noting the constitutionally guaranteed minority rights; however his protest falls on deaf ears. Marie and her fiancé, Dr. Fritz Mutius, drive to the provincial capital, in order to put their protest to the Voivode (governor), but they are not even received there either. Deciding to stay in the capital in order to call on the court the next day, that evening they go to the cinema. They are accompanied there by her friend Karl Michalek, who has been pressed into service by the Polish Armed Forces. When they refuse to sing the Polish national anthem Mazurek Dąbrowskiego with the rest of the audience, Fritz gets grievously hurt by the furious Polish crowd. Marie tries to take her betrothed to a hospital, but he is refused admission and succumbs to his injuries.

The film begins in 1813 after the phase of the Napoleonic Wars known in German as the Befreiungskriege (War of Liberation). The opening scenes show Prussian Landwehr and volunteers marching down the streets of Breslau through enthusiastic crowds. This is followed by a dialogue between King Frederick William III of Prussia and Count August von Gneisenau, in which Gneisenau explains that the siege of Kolberg taught the importance of citizen armies. Ending with the admonition that kings who cannot lead must abdicate, the scene switches to Vienna in 1806 to show the abdication of the last Holy Roman Emperor, Francis II of Austria, whom the script has Gneisenau call "an Emperor who abandoned the German people in their hour of need".

Le Levantin Thomas Zezi passe un an et demi en prison pour contrebande. Il est libéré et revient chez lui.
