It stars Prabhu Deva and Bhumika Chawla in the lead roles, while Prakash Raj, Inbanila, who acted in Thangar Bachan's earlier venture Onbadhu Roobai Nottu and Ganja Karuppu play supporting roles. Sathyaraj is expected to play a guest role as Periyar E. V. Ramasami, reprising his role from Periyar. Principal photography commenced on 25 March 2009, and was completed in mid-2010, with the producers delaying its theatrical release for over 5 years.

Shanmugam (Parthiban), a veterinary doctor, lives in the city with his wife Valarmati(Devayani) and their two children. In school, Shanmugam was in love with his classmate Dhanalakshmi but fate had forced them to go their separate ways, with Dhanalakshmi (Nandita Das) being forced to wed her brother-in-law. Madhava Padayachi (Sathyaraj) narrates his life to a young man who saves him from shame.
